Job Summary:

Camp Bette Perot is a year-round camp with more than 210 bedspaces and a thriving equestrian program, situated on approximately 1,300 acres of piney woods in East Texas and open since 1970. The Equestrian Care Specialist is responsible for the daily care and overall health of the equestrian facility’s horses and livestock, including daily nutrition and veterinary care. Working closely with the Equestrian Center Manager, this role ensures compliance with GSNETX, ACA, and state standards while fostering a safe and supportive environment for fostering a love of horses. This position also helps maintain facilities and supervises staff as needed. The position reports to the Equestrian Center Manager and is a key member of a camp team dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence, and character through community life outdoors.

Essential Functions:

Horse Care and Health

  • Oversee daily feeding, vet care, and overall health of a herd of 80-100 horses and other livestock.
  • Schedule vet and farrier visits and manage medication and supplement inventory.
  • Maintain detailed records of each horse’s health and vet history.
  • Manage horse care budget and procure feed and other supplies.

Program Support

  • Assist in developing and implementing equestrian programs, including summer camps, weekend events, and the Tejas Rider program.
  • Support Tejas Rider product sales and related activities.

Facility and Equipment Management
  • Ensure the equestrian facilities are clean, safe, and organized.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of equipment, fences, gates, and tack.
  • Coordinate tack fitting for all horses and train volunteers in tack care.

Safety and Supervision
  • Ensure compliance with ACA standards, GSUSA policies, and state health regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies and maintain a safe environment for participants.
  • Supervise and support seasonal and part-time equestrian staff.
Camper and Volunteer Engagement
  • Create an inclusive and welcoming environment for campers, staff, and volunteers.
  • Serve as a role model, upholding the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Train and support volunteers with varying levels of equestrian experience.

Other:

  • This position generally works Wednesdays through Sundays during fall, winter, and spring. This position generally works Sundays through Fridays during summer, with long days daily. Willingness to work a flexible schedule is essential.
  • Be active outdoors in variable weather conditions all year, including walking around camp on uneven terrain.
  • Be welcoming, respectful, enthusiastic, and professional with colleagues, members of all ages, and the public at all times.
  • Must be able to travel within established geographic areas and council service centers, as necessary.
  • Must have reliable transportation, hold a valid driver’s license and meet GSNETX driving record & automobile insurance requirements.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Must be comfortable hauling/backing 32ft horse/livestock trailers, tractors, and other EQ facility equipment if needed.

Job Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Some college preferred, especially related to equine science, equestrian business/ranch management, animal science or a closely related field preferred or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience managing care of multiple horses including solid working knowledge of feed, supplements, first aid, and equine behavior and movement
  • Significant riding and saddling experience
  • Previous experience teaching horseback riding lessons
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, organize workload, and respond promptly to urgent situations
  • Ability to train and supervise volunteers (and others) who have a wide range of equine skills and abilities for specific tasks; ability to delegate responsibilities with a growth mindset
  • Knowledge of facility and ranch equipment- Must be able to operate a tractor and other EQ facility vehicles.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with children ages 5 and above, adults, and horses.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrate and promote a climate of courtesy, respect and professionalism to coworkers, the volunteers served by this council, and others with whom this job puts them in contact.
  • Upon employment, employee must register as an adult member in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Attendance is an essential job requirement defined as having regular, consistent, reliable, punctual and predictable attendance including the ability to work regular hours and shifts, before and after hours, and on weekends, when required.
  • Must complete and pass a criminal background check.
