A Titan PULSE Mentor (TPM) is a P eer U tilizing L eadership for S tudent E xcellence. Mentors are high-achievers with a positive attitude, and who also display: critical thinking skills, relationship building skills, and a commitment to ethical leadership. The ideals of our community stem from our belief that PULSE Mentors should be advocates for students, relationship builders, and impactful campus leaders.
Essential Functions
Academic Support: Each TPM will demonstrate a commitment to academic support in the following ways:
- Model positive academic behaviors and keep academics as a priority.
- Understand college support services/resources and refer students when necessary.
- Engage in academic success interventions and intentional 1-on-1 conversations with students consistent with departmental requirements and learning outcomes.
- Attendance and full participation at all scheduled training sessions and required presentations/events.
- Be flexible and willing to do other duties as assigned.
- Complete all administrative tasks fully and punctually. Tasks include but are not limited to submitting weekly reports, completing 1-on-1s with mentees and with your TPM Coordinator.
- Read and respond to all communication, i.e. texts, calls, emails, etc.
- Communicate respectfully and effectively with mentees, TCC staff and faculty, ad fellow TPMs.
- Maintain sensitive student information at all times. Do not discuss mentee issues with peers or other TPMs. Discuss mentee issues with your supervisor
- Encourage responsible behavior by role modeling personal and social responsibility.
- Know your mentee population by name within the first two weeks of the quarter
- Plan social activities and bonding opportunities for mentees throughout current quarter to encourage interpersonal and inclusive group interactions.
- Collaborate with other TPMs on programs, so that mentees within the cohort can get to know one another.
- Lead quarterly workshops for those mentees to learn personal and professional skills.
- Participate and engage in departmental trainings and continued learning o the subject of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Role model inclusion through engaging in dialogue with mentees, staff, and faculty. Engage in personal reflection.
- Address actions and words that limit our efforts towards creating an environment that supports and encourages the acceptance of diversity.
- Maintain an inclusive TCC community environment.
- Assess needs and concerns of mentees through regular contact and communication.
- Contact senior staff immediately to report any incident of bias.
- TPMs must abide by department, college policies, and local, state, and federal laws.
Minimum Qualifications
- Be currently enrolled in six credits or more at Tacoma Community College.
- In good academic standing with Tacoma Community College.
- A proactive approach to embracing new challenges, acquiring new skills, and adapting to changes.
- A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Bilingual/multilingual.
Conditions of Employment
The finalist for this position will be subject to a criminal background check prior to the start of employment. Information from the background check will not necessarily prevent employment, but will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by HR staff.
Commitment of 10-17 hours per week.
Regular and predictable attendance.

- Understand that being a TPM is one of the most impactful leadership positions at TCC and it will be treated with respect.
- Demonstrate a commitment to personal integrity, such as modeling good judgment, ethical behavior, and adherence to laws and policies.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal communication skills.
- Understand that being a TPM requires time and dedication both in and out of the classroom; it will require additional work and time outside of the scheduled class times.
- Participate in regular 1-on-1 meetings with mentees, meetings with supervisor, ongoing departmental communication and training.
- Positively engage and contribute during staff meetings, trainings, and retreats.
- Be available to act as a support system for the selected mentee cohort.
- Keep senior staff informed of all crisis incidents as they happen
- Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediation needs, and crisis situations.
- Respond to emergencies immediately and follow appropriate protocol.
- Hold each other accountable as TPMs.
- Each TPM is subject to possible progressive discipline up to and including termination in the event that they violate any policies, procedures and regulations of TCC.
