This position has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the use of the nursing process. The incumbent accepts accountability, applies competent clinical knowledge and skills, and uses independent nursing judgment to provide care for self and for care delegated to other health‑care providers to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The incumbent must demonstrate clinical knowledge at the novice level necessary to care for patients in an inpatient hospital setting and apply principles of growth and development across the lifespan. The incumbent also must assess and interpret patient data to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age‑specific needs. Core Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrates safety and continuity of care using methods such as documentation, handoff tools, and processes. Creates a plan of care using the nursing process: assessment, diagnoses, interventions, and evaluation of outcomes. Recognizes patient safety concerns through appropriate resources. Provides education based on the unique learning needs of the patient. Incorporates patient individuality and mutuality data into the delivery of care. Performs an adequate patient assessment and documentation. Demonstrates teach‑back method to evaluate effectiveness of education. Utilizes evidence‑based practice in nursing care. Participates in an organization’s patient‑centered care model. Documents problems and issues in the plan of care. Demonstrates growth in caring for more complex patients through consultation with experienced colleagues. Shows commitment to lifelong learning through self‑reflection and inquiry for learning and personal growth. Retains accountability for delegated nursing care. Recognizes scope of practice for all inter‑professional team members. Participates in holistic, culturally sensitive data collection. Assesses the impact of family dynamics on healthcare consumer health and wellness. Integrates the American Nursing Association’s code of ethics to guide nursing practice. Identifies discriminatory health care practices in culturally diverse populations. Individualizes care based on patient beliefs, barriers, and readiness to learn. Minimum Qualifications Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided, or a current multi‑state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN). Physical Requirements Minimize manual lifting of patients; safe patient handling should not exceed 35 pounds and should use lift equipment and patient handling aids as required. Work requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40 plus pounds. Visual acuity must be within the normal range. Hearing within the normal range is required for assessing breath sounds, bowel sounds, apical pulse, monitors, etc. Working Environment Protracted or irregular hours. Exposure to biohazards. CAPE Program Overview The CAPE program is a system‑wide clinical advancement program (clinical ladder) to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality nursing, and improve job satisfaction for inpatient direct care nurses. CAPE Program Levels Level 1 No experience required. All graduate nurses with less than 12 months experience enter at Level 1 with a diploma, ADN, BSN, or higher. Level 2 Meets Level 1 requirements. One year of experience. Level 3 Meets Level 2 requirements. Two years of experience plus one specialty certification. Certification is preferred but not required. Required competencies include regular charge nurse duties and/or precepting new staff or nursing students. Level 4 Available to those with a BSN or higher, or nurses with ADN/diploma and five years experience. One specialty certification is required. Required competencies include regular charge nurse duties and/or precepting new staff or nursing students. Required competencies include participation in QI and shared governance at the unit level. Level 5 Available to those with an MSN or higher with four years experience, or nurses with a BSN and four years experience with a health‑related master’s degree, or nurses with a BSN and five years experience. One specialty certification is required. Required competencies include regular charge nurse duties and/or precepting new staff or nursing students. Required competencies include participation in QI and shared governance at the organization level. Level 6 Available to those with an MSN or higher with seven or more years experience; consideration given to other health‑related advanced degrees that assist with direct patient care at the bedside. One specialty certification is required. Required competencies include regular charge nurse duties and/or precepting new staff or nursing students.
