Provide clerical support, basic first aid, student supervision, health-office organization, and other health-related assistance that has been assigned and, when required, delegated by the registered nurse. The Nurse Aide does not independently assess, diagnose, develop nursing care plans, or make decisions requiring professional nursing judgment. Qualifications Education and Certification High school diploma or GED. Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED), and first aid preferred; must obtain and maintain required certifications within the timeline established by the District. Complete District-required training for medication administration, emergency response, confidentiality, infection control, and any assigned student‑specific health procedures before performing those duties. Experience Experience working with children or adolescents preferred. Experience in a school, clinic, medical office, or other health-support setting preferred. Special Knowledge and Skills Ability to follow written health plans, emergency action plans, physician orders, District procedures, and directions from the campus registered nurse. Knowledge of basic first aid, infection-control practices, and emergency‑response procedures. Ability to recognize and promptly report changes, concerns, or emergency warning signs to the registered nurse or appropriate administrator. Ability to maintain accurate records and protect confidential student health information. Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and basic computer skills. Ability to remain calm, respectful, and responsive when assisting students, families, and staff. Major Responsibilities and Duties Student Health Support Welcome students to the health office, obtain basic information regarding the reason for the visit, and immediately refer urgent concerns to the campus registered nurse. Provide basic first aid and routine comfort measures in accordance with District procedures, training, and the direction of the registered nurse. Observe students in the health office and promptly communicate changes in appearance, behavior, symptoms, or condition to the registered nurse. Assist students with mobility, positioning, toileting, hygiene, or other personal‑care needs when assigned, trained, and authorized, while preserving student dignity and privacy. Support students with individualized health plans or emergency action plans only within the aide's documented training and assigned responsibilities. Do not perform independent nursing assessments, interpret clinical findings, alter a health plan, or make decisions that require professional nursing judgment. Medication and Health Procedures Assist with medication administration or health‑related procedures only when assigned by an authorized District official, permitted by law and District policy, and after the registered nurse has verified the aide's training and competency. Follow all written instructions for student identification, medication, dosage, time, route, documentation, storage, and reporting of errors or adverse reactions. Immediately notify the registered nurse or administrator of a medication discrepancy, missed dose, error, unexpected reaction, or concern regarding a student's condition. Maintain medication, equipment, and supplies securely and never perform a task outside the scope of assigned training or authorization. Emergency Response Respond promptly to student or staff illness and injury and activate emergency procedures as directed by training, campus protocols, and the registered nurse or administrator. Assist with emergency medications or treatments only when specifically trained and authorized under applicable law, District policy, and the student's emergency plan. Call 911, notify campus administration, contact the registered nurse, and provide reasonable emergency assistance when circumstances require immediate action. Participate in emergency drills, preparedness activities, and review of health‑office emergency supplies. Records, Communication, and Office Operations Accurately document health‑office visits, services provided, medication administration, parent contacts, and other required information in the designated student information or health‑record system. Assist with clerical review of immunization records, health forms, screening records, physician orders, emergency information, and parent authorizations; refer compliance or clinical decisions to the registered nurse. Communicate courteously with parents, guardians, staff, and health‑care providers as directed, without offering medical advice or disclosing confidential information improperly. Maintain an orderly, clean, and well‑stocked health office; monitor inventory and notify the registered nurse when supplies or equipment are needed. Assist with scheduling, filing, data entry, copying, preparation of notices, and other routine office duties. Screenings and Student Services Assist with state‑or District‑required screenings, follow‑up notices, and related documentation under the direction of qualified personnel. Help prepare screening areas, organize supplies, escort students, record nonclinical information, and maintain student privacy. Support campus wellness, communicable‑disease prevention, and health‑education activities as assigned. Safety, Confidentiality, and Compliance Follow universal precautions, infection‑control procedures, bloodborne‑pathogen requirements, and safe disposal practices. Maintain confidentiality of student and employee records in accordance with applicable law, District policy, and professional expectations. Report suspected child abuse or neglect, safety concerns, and policy violations as required by law and District procedures. Comply with all District policies, campus procedures, training requirements, and reasonable directives from supervisors. Maintain dependable attendance and punctuality to support continuous health‑office coverage. Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the general purpose and scope of the position. Equipment Used Computer, printer, copier, telephone, student information and health‑record systems, thermometer, blood‑pressure equipment, pulse oximeter, glucometer, AED, first‑aid supplies, personal protective equipment, mobility equipment, and other health‑office equipment for which the employee has been trained and authorized. Working Conditions Mental Demands Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions; communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and emergency personnel; follow detailed instructions; manage multiple priorities; and respond appropriately to illness, injury, and emergency situations. Physical Demands and Environmental Factors Frequent walking, standing, sitting, bending, reaching, and use of hands; ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and to assist with heavier loads using appropriate equipment or additional personnel; ability to respond quickly throughout the campus. Work may involve exposure to bodily fluids, communicable illnesses, cleaning agents, medical supplies, and emotionally challenging situations. Personal protective equipment must be used as required.
