Certified School Nurse

The Certified School Nurse is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of students and personnel through the development and implementation of the school health services. The Certified School Nurse is responsible for implementing Health Services for the entire school district when needed and makes recommendations for the administration of the non-certified school nurses where appropriate.

Type 73 Certification as defined by the State of Illinois Professional Registered Nurse for the State of Illinois Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certification Audiometric Certification Vision Screening Certification

It is the responsibility of the Certified School Nurse to attain and maintain the optimum health status of the school community through planning, implementation and evaluation of the school health services including federal, state and district policies.

1. Health Care The Certified School Nurse manages the health care of students and personnel.

Provide direct first aid and emergency care Perform health assessments Communicate with students, parents, health care providers and staff regarding preventive health care, health problems and injuries Advocate for health rights of students Provide health education, counseling, and guidance on an individual basis or within a group setting Assess and keep cumulative health records for each student following the guidelines of federal and state mandates Supervise and direct administration of medication Supervise and evaluate the professional assistant 1

2. Health School Environment The Certified School Nurse assesses, promotes, and maintains a risk-free school environment.

Plan, implement and follow school screening programs Determine the epidemiological impact of communicable diseases Observe and report possible unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel Participate actively as a resource person/consultant to administration, staff, students, and parents Understand and interpret future health care trends and their impact on the school community Initiate preventive plans as needed

3. Special Education The Certified School Nurse performs those duties as delineated in federal and state mandates.

Annually screen students for vision and hearing at any school or program in the district Participate in intake conference and MDC at any school or program in the district Obtain information for the purpose of completing health histories and mandated re-evaluations at any school or program in the district Develop the health-related IEP when appropriate at any school or program in the district

4. Professional Responsibilities The Certified School Nurse remains current regarding ideas and methods related to professional standards and regulations.

Maintain nursing registration, School Nurse, and vision and audiometric certification Attend workshops, meeting and conventions related to school health, to share the new information with the school community Participate actively in professional organizations

Work will require very infrequent lifting, pulling, or pushing during the normal performance of tasks and responsibilities. Work may require frequent walking and standing.

Work is performed in an environment where unusual temperature, noise, and hazards are relatively nonexistent.

Compensated per the Faculty Association Contract Agreement.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Faculty Association contract agreement.
