On call/as needed substitute Bus Driver for regular bus driver routes

General Description: The bus driver transports students and authorized persons on regular routes to and from school. School buses are operated under all types of weather conditions. The bus driver must maintain required certifications and training, and perform routine maintenance, inspection and cleaning of an assigned vehicle.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Drives a school bus on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
  • Service, inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by state regulations and district policy.
  • Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety; report unsafe acts or conditions that require the attention of any person other than the driver.
  • Complete forms, records and reports as required by state regulations or district policy.
  • Successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Perform other school bus driver related duties as directed by district policies.
  • Complete all assigned SafeSchools/Vector Training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • A valid Washington State School Bus Driver's Certificate.
  • A valid Washington State Driver's License with the proper endorsements.
  • A minimum of five years driving experience and an acceptable driving record (no conviction in the previous five years of hit and run driving, driving or in physical control of a vehicle while intoxicated, reckless driving, negligent homicide while driving).
  • Physical and mental standards necessary to meet the requirements of the job, as demonstrated by a physical exam, including: an acceptable pre-employment drug/alcohol test result, as required by district policy; sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter and exit a school bus through the passenger door, and to assist students in case of emergency; the ability and knowledge to perform first aid as needed, including CPR; hearing that is acute enough to detect and distinguish traffic sounds and emergency signals from a distance which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid a hazardous situation 20/40 vision in the best eye, with or without correction; 140 peripheral vision (which as a single criteria shall not be excluding); adequate depth perception to reasonably determine distance and closing rate of other moving vehicles; sufficient eye coordination to avoid dyplopia; and sufficient color vision to distinguish red, amber and green.
  • A helpful, calm, friendly, and polite manner when interacting with students, parents and school staff.
  • The ability to make reasoned decisions.
  • Good moral character, i.e., no conviction for previous seven years of: drug use, sale, possession or transportation, or violation of any law which would demonstrate poor moral character.
  • Appropriate discretion concerning students, staff, and confidential or privileged information.

Working Conditions:

  • Operates a school bus, seated for extended periods and using fingers, hands, arms and upper body to manage driving functions.
  • Bends, twists, and lifts up to 20 pounds when accessing bus equipment or conduction bus inspections.
  • Occasionally exposed to high decibel alarm systems during drills or an actual emergency.
  • Routinely exposed to bus exhaust.
  • Uses a telephone and a radio to communicate.
