The Phlebotomist is responsible for providing a positive patient experience while safely and accurately performing blood draws and other specimen collections.The ideal candidate is confident with venipuncture, attentive to detail, comfortable working with patients of all ages, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, specimen integrity, confidentiality, and customer service.Key ResponsibilitiesPhlebotomy & Specimen CollectionPerform venipuncture and capillary blood collections accurately and safely.Collect blood, urine, swab, and other specimens according to test requirements and established procedures.Verify patient identity using appropriate identification procedures before specimen collection.Review laboratory requisitions and ensure the correct tests and collection requirements are followed.Properly label, process, prepare, and package specimens for laboratory testing and transport.Maintain specimen integrity throughout the collection and processing process.Follow proper order-of-draw procedures and specimen handling requirements.Provide clear instructions to patients regarding specimen collection and preparation.Monitor patients during and after blood collection for signs of discomfort, dizziness, or adverse reactions.Respond appropriately to difficult draws and escalate concerns when necessary.Maintain a clean, organized, and properly stocked phlebotomy area.Follow OSHA, infection-control, bloodborne-pathogen, and laboratory safety requirements.QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent required.Phlebotomy certification preferred.Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.Previous professional phlebotomy experience preferred.Experience performing venipuncture on a variety of patients strongly preferred.Current CPR/BLS certification preferred.Knowledge of medical terminology and specimen collection procedures.Knowledge of OSHA and infection-control standards.Strong attention to detail and commitment to specimen accuracy.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Professional appearance and demeanor.Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Preferred ExperienceExperience in one or more of the following settings is preferred:Independent diagnostic laboratoryPatient service centerPhysician's officeHospital or outpatient laboratoryMedical officeBlood donation or collection centerOccupational healthMobile phlebotomyRequired SkillsVenipunctureCapillary blood collectionSpecimen labeling and processingPatient identificationOrder of drawInfection controlPatient-centered communicationCustomer serviceAttention to detailHIPAA complianceTime managementTeamworkProfessionalismProblem-solvingPhysical RequirementsAbility to stand and walk for extended periods.Ability to sit and perform computer and administrative tasks.Ability to perform repetitive phlebotomy and specimen-processing activities.Ability to bend, reach, and safely handle laboratory supplies.Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment as required.Ability to safely perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures.Work EnvironmentThe Phlebotomist will work in a patient-facing laboratory service environment and should be comfortable interacting with patients throughout the day. The position requires the ability to maintain accuracy and professionalism in a fast-paced setting while following established clinical, safety, and operational procedures.
