Diesel Mechanic

Bus Mechanic Caddo Mills ISD

Perform minor to major mechanical repairs, primarily to diesel engines, to ensure district vehicles' proper performance and safety. Work on assigned projects and follow established procedures.

Qualifications:

• Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with S&P Endorsements or ability to obtain.
• Ability to pass a DOT Medical Examination and complete and maintain a Bus Safety Certification Course.
• Ability to pass alcohol and drug testing per DOT requirements.
• Valid Texas State Inspector Certification to perform Safety and Commercial DOT Inspections or ability to obtain.
• Ability to obtain an HVAC/Air Conditioning License to service automotive air conditioning
• Ability to obtain a TCEQ Class A/B Fuel Handler Certification
• Acceptable driving record.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Ability to diagnose minor to complex mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision. Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair. Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.
• Ability to understand detailed written or oral instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to operate power-driven equipment.

Experience:

Minimum two years of previous experience

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
• Perform major and minor mechanical repairs.
• Do welding and minor body work.
• Service vehicles according to the established preventive maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, and lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
• Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
• Inspect vehicles and evaluate the condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed. Perform state inspections of vehicle fleet annually.
• Perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment, including bleeding of air tanks, according to established schedules.
• Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
• Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
• Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
• Conduct daily fuel inventory and reconciliation in accordance with TCEQ regulations.
• Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
• Work irregular hours and perform other duties as required.

Safety:

• Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing.
• Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
• Help keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
• Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventive maintenance.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack, and lift equipment: school bus and district vehicles.

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching.

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
