Job Summary The High School Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that promotes physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and lifelong wellness. This position delivers standards-aligned instruction that develops students' physical abilities, teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility while encouraging lifelong participation in physical activity. The High School Physical Education Teacher collaborates with students, families, and school staff to support student achievement and uphold the mission and values of the school. Essential Duties Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned Physical Education lessons for high school students that promote physical fitness, health, and lifelong wellness. Plan and implement age-appropriate activities that develop motor skills, physical conditioning, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, physical abilities, and individual student needs. Assess student performance through fitness assessments, skill demonstrations, participation, and other appropriate evaluation methods. Create and maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation and respect for others. Teach proper techniques, rules, and safety procedures for individual and team sports, fitness activities, and recreational games. Promote healthy lifestyle choices, goal setting, and personal fitness through evidence-based instructional practices. Supervise students during physical education classes and other assigned activities while enforcing school policies and safety procedures. Maintain and inspect gymnasium equipment, fitness equipment, and instructional materials to ensure a safe learning environment. Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, analyze student data, and participate in ongoing professional development. Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504, and other student support meetings as required. Participate in school activities, meetings, and events to contribute to the overall mission of the institution. Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and school staff. Regular and predictable attendance. Cognitive Demands Supervision of multiple students during indoor and outdoor physical activities. Establishing routines and procedures that promote safety, participation, and student engagement. Maintaining a safe, organized, and positive learning environment. Creating and implementing engaging instructional plans aligned with curriculum standards. Assessing student progress and adapting instruction to meet diverse learning needs. Managing multiple priorities while ensuring student safety and achievement. Participating in continuous professional development. Effective oral and written communication skills. Physical Demands Frequently stand, walk, run, bend, kneel, squat, reach, and demonstrate physical activities throughout the school day. Frequently participate in physical activities and demonstrations during instruction. Occasionally lift, carry, or move equipment and objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently set up, move, and store athletic and physical education equipment. Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the school year. Withstand moderate to high noise levels in gymnasiums, athletic facilities, and outdoor activity areas. Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary. Assist/lift students, as necessary. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus. Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Physical Education (MB) endorsement . Strong knowledge of secondary physical education curriculum, instructional best practices, and student assessment. Ability to develop engaging lessons that promote physical fitness, wellness, teamwork, leadership, and healthy lifestyles. Excellent classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in planning, instruction, and assessment. Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain if required. Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and school leadership to support student success.
