Section Head's Assistant

The Section Head's Assistant is part of the school administration and supports the Horticulture (HORT) Section and the Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology (PPPMB) Section, providing professional administrative support to the two Section Heads. The sections have a physical presence in both the Ithaca and Geneva (AgriTech) campuses with students, faculty, and staff in both locations. This position is based in Ithaca.

This position provides high level administrative support to two section heads (HORT and PPPMB) and assists with academic section processes, including, but not limited to: coordinating information and materials for the section heads' offices; managing the section heads' calendars and appointments; answering inquiries about the sections' programs; managing sensitive and/or confidential materials both written and verbal with discretion; coordinating academic appointments; and fostering excellent working relationships within and outside of the sections; facilitating interactions and communications involving the section heads and faculty, staff, students, visitors, and other college and university offices; supporting academic searches and compiling tenure and promotion packages; collaborating with CALS HR on appointments in both the sections; scheduling and attending faculty meetings and preparing minutes, as necessary.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. The School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) is composed of five sections: Soil & Crop Sciences, Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, and Plant Pathology & Plant-Microbe Biology. Collectively, SIPS has 100+ faculty, 200+ PhD/MS/MPS graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees, located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The school offers a multidisciplinary undergraduate major in Plant Science and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. SIPS faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

Hours and Location

This position is 97.5% FTE, 39-hour per week, full-time, benefits-eligible, and based at SIPS in Emerson Hall on Cornell's Ithaca Campus. Core working hours for this position are typically Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with 3 days on campus and 2 days remote. Details on start and finish times, along with hybrid set up will be mutually determined between you and your supervisor. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke, or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.

• Associate's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

• Bachelor's degree is preferred.
• Must be able to enhance personal knowledge, skills, and abilities as needed.
• Prior experience in academic setting helpful and/or supporting academic program activities.
• Prior experience in event planning helpful.
