Job Description New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a full‑time , 40‑hour/5‑day Certified Medical Assistant to join our Lewiston, ME location. The Medical Assistant will provide comprehensive care to patients with cancer and blood disorders, including rooming patients, taking vitals, completing symptom review forms, reviewing medications, assisting in the infusion center, and performing phlebotomy. The role is performed within a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, advanced practice providers, a primary nurse navigator, and a patient care coordinator. NECS is a private medical practice comprised of 18 oncologists and hematologists serving the region from six locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Job Duties Set up examination rooms, including preparation, ordering/stocking supplies, and maintaining cleanliness. Professionally greet and room patients for appointments; obtain vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse. Use professional judgment in disclosing information obtained from clients and operating under HIPAA guidelines. Record and report abnormal vital signs to the appropriate clinical provider for immediate intervention. Complete medication and allergy reconciliation documentation in the EMR. Assist patients and enter information into the EMR: ROS form, pain assessment, fatigue assessment, and depression screening. Complete laboratory work and draw blood specimens as required. Assist physicians and advanced practicing providers with examinations and procedures, including bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and intrathecal (OMAYA) procedures. Independently perform EKGs as ordered by the provider. Follow established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, as well as safety, environmental, and infection‑control standards. Perform administrative duties as needed, including basic phone triage and scheduling appointments and procedures, scanning, faxing, filing, prior authorizations, PMP reporting, oral adherence calls, and preparing, organizing, and requesting patient records for the EMR. Work Week Monday through Friday, with no late nights. Travel Travel between Lewiston and Topsham when needed. Required Experience A degree or certificate in Medical Assisting from an accredited school is required. Within 90 days of hire, obtain one of the following credentials: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the AAMA; Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the AMT; Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the NHA; National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the NCCT; Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the ARMA; or National Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) from the NAHP. Two or more years of experience as a Medical Assistant performing clinical and administrative tasks is preferred, but qualified newcomers who meet the degree/certificate requirements and can obtain certification within 90 days will be considered. Experience with insurance prior authorizations, medication refills, and chart preparation is required. Active BLS card is preferred. Ability to interpret patient medical records, physician orders, and medical orders is required. Adhere to accepted clinical standards and maintain strict HIPAA compliance. Excellent oral and written communication skills and typing skills are required. Adaptability to working in front of patients or at workstations outside the clinic is required.
