Environmental Specialist II
The incumbent in this position shall be responsible for multiple environmental health programs in Hendry and Glades Counties. This position requires vast technical knowledge within all environmental health programs. The incumbent must have the ability to exercise discretion and make independent professional judgments within all environmental health programs. Primary responsibilities include food hygiene coordinator, monitoring and conducting routine inspections of migrant labor housing facilities, biomedical waste facilities, food hygiene facilities, mobile home and recreational vehicle parks, public and private schools, public swimming pools, tattooing facilities, and tanning facilities, investigating complaints and preparing reports, legal notices and other documents. Other responsibilities include monitoring and conducting inspections of onsite sewage and treatment disposal system inspections and monitoring, permitting, coordinating and conducting water well construction inspections. Position functions independently and under the direction of the Environmental Manager. This position is headquartered at the Florida Department of Health in Hendry County, Division of Environmental Health, and reports directly to the Environmental Supervisor. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to speak English.
- Ability to operate general office equipment.
- Ability to frequently use telephone, computer, copier, and small hand tools, i.e: stapler, scissors etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to understand, interpret, and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize individual workload.
- Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Ability to work with occasional loud noises indoors and/or outdoors.
- Ability to work outdoors with various temperature changes.
- Ability to walk for long periods of time or great distances.
- Ability to locate information that is listed alphabetically and numerically.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to review data for accuracy and completeness.
- Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read maps and drive in unincorporated areas of Hendry and Glades Counties.
- Incumbent will be assigned a county vehicle and will be responsible for maintain and operating the vehicle per state and county regulations.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, the Environmental Health Database and Environmental Health Database Mobile Application.
- Knowledge of field equipment required, included but not limited to, digital camera, and other equipment as deemed necessary to perform facility inspections.
- Knowledge of environmental principles, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage.
Qualifications:
- Minimum: The incumbent must be a certified Florida Environmental Health Professional in both Food Protection and Onsite Program or a Registered Sanitation (NEHA or FEHA) within six months of hire.
- The incumbent must obtain food hygiene coordinator certification within twelve months of hire.
- The incumbent must obtain Incident Command System (ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700A) certifications within sixty days of employment.
- A bachelor's degree from an U.S. accredited college or university, with major course work in environmental health, environmental science or a physical or biological science with a total of at least 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of undergraduate coursework in these sciences is required.
- AHA certification in CPR.
- Incumbent will have access to Social Security numbers in the performance of duties.
- Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
- Valid Florida driver's license and reliable transportation is required.
- This position requires daily in-office or field work.
- This position requires current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. The Department of Health is unable to provide employment visa sponsorship.
