General Summary This position works part time within schools in the county during school sessions. Interviewing and selection will aim for technicians to begin training in August 2026. Compensation is $21.88 – $29.32 per hour. The role involves conducting hearing and vision screenings for preschool and school‑age children across the community. What You’ll Do Conduct hearing and vision screenings for preschool and school‑age children using specialized equipment and MDHHS protocols. Interpret screening results and coordinate follow‑up testing or referrals when needed. Prepare reports and maintain accurate screening records and documentation. Coordinate with schools and clinic sites to schedule screenings and organize testing logistics. Transport screening equipment and materials to schools and clinic locations throughout Oakland County. Communicate professionally with parents, teachers, school staff, and healthcare providers regarding results and referrals. Provide information about available community resources and services. Participate in ongoing education and training related to hearing and vision screening practices. Minimum Qualifications Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate and at least six (6) months of full‑time work experience using audiometric or vision screening materials and instruments; or at least one (1) course in hearing or vision technician training, audiology, or a closely related subject; or have successfully completed sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university with at least twelve (12) semester credit hours in Early Childhood Development, Elementary Education, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related area; or have had at least six (6) months of paid or volunteer experience working directly with pre‑school or elementary school‑age children in a school, church, daycare, extracurricular clubs, or sports. Additional Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and techniques of hearing threshold and/or vision screening. Certificate of completion of the MDHHS Comprehensive Hearing and/or Vision training course. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with professional and paraprofessional public health employees and the general public. Positive and professional interaction with parents, teachers, school administrators, school support staff, and children of varying ages and developmental levels. Ability to work independently. Knowledge of social needs, habits, and behavior characteristics of pre‑school and school‑age children. Ability to counsel, instruct, and communicate test results to others and to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to prepare and write routine reports. Ability to cope with difficult situations requiring immediate decisions in accordance with departmental policies and objectives. Reasonable ability to utilize current word processing, e‑mail, and Internet software. Special Requirements Maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Submit to required immunizations, periodic tuberculin skin tests, or chest x‑rays at County expense. Pass a criminal background check prior to employment. Must complete the first available MDHHS comprehensive training course after hire and any additional approved training that occurs prior to completing the comprehensive course. Essential Job Functions Perform hearing and/or vision screening for preschool and school‑age children using equipment as per MDHHS protocols. Interpret results, arrange retesting for indicated deficiencies, and complete reports for parents and school personnel. Identify and follow up on referred children to assure medical attention is received. Coordinate with school personnel to arrange and confirm testing space and duties. Transport necessary testing material and equipment to worksite. Complete daily reports detailing screening results and code information for the data processing system. Schedule appointments, maintain files and records. Provide referral information to public and community partners. Assist physicians at clinics with medical dictation or exam assistance. Participate in continual education and training sessions. Use countywide or department specific software to complete assignments. Essential Mental & Physical Requirements Ability to communicate accurately to convey information. Ability to transport and operate typical hearing/vision equipment and supplies. Working Conditions Work is performed in a typical clinic environment or schools and may require travel to other locations during the course of work.
