Summary This Diagnostic Radiology Technologist position is assigned to the Indianapolis VAMC - Radiology Service. The incumbent will perform routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures. The exams are achieved by using diagnostic X‑ray equipment. Digital Radiography/Fluoroscopy is used to capture and process images which are then stored in the Picture Archiving and Communication System. This position also performs standard release of information duties for the Radiology Department. Qualifications Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen (non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates). Certification: Must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT‑R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for CT, MRI, or mammography duties performed independently. Education: Completion of at least 24 months of full‑time diagnostic radiologic technology training, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree accredited by JRCERT (or other recognized accrediting agencies). Experience/Grade: Appropriate experience or education for GS‑5 through GS‑8 as described in the job posting. Technical KSAs: Knowledge and ability to perform basic technique standards, anatomy and positioning, patient safety, radiographic equipment operation, basic computer functions, digital image adequacy, contrast material use, radiation protection, computed radiography, PACS, and advanced digital imaging skills as required for the grade level. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 45 pounds, carry 15‑44 pounds, push equipment for up to 4 hours, reach above the shoulder, use both hands with dexterity, walk and stand for prolonged periods, bend repeatedly, coordinate rapid mental and muscular movements, correct vision to 20/20, distinguish basic colors, hearing with or without aid, maintain speed, emotional stability, and work while wearing a lead apron. Duties Assist radiologists in fluoroscopic examinations. Prepare contrast materials under the radiologist’s direction for exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP, cystogram, cholangiogram, fistulography, arthrography, and oral/rectal GI studies. Receive and interpret all radiology requests and input relevant information into the computer system. Perform and ensure quality of radiographic exams of the head, spine, chest, abdomen, and extremities, including gross organ systems, while minimizing patient dosage and cost. Practice radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self. Correctly select patient demographics from the RIS system for each exam. Explain exams to patients in understandable terms and describe potential hazards. Perform bedside and operating room radiographic exams for patients unable to be x‑rayed in the Radiology Service. Adjust exam protocols as needed to accommodate individual medical conditions and body habitus. Troubleshoot equipment and make minor repairs or adjustments. Maintain cleanliness and stock supplies in assigned areas. Supervise and train rotating radiology students. Maintain records and files of exams performed on patients, including electronic logs, data statistics, and image copying to CD/DVD. Transfer patient images to PACS and from PACS to CD format for patient transfer. Manage and maintain SharePoint log for CD and Import activities.
