Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition)

Summary The incumbent serves as the subject matter expert in clinical nutrition and manages a complex Clinical Nutrition Section. The Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition) provides administrative and technical supervision to GS‑12 Dietitians and directs the work of clinical dietitians at the GS‑11 level and below. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) – Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Grade Determinations: Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition) – GS‑13. Experience – One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Skill in written communication, including policy development and standard operating procedures; skill in strategic planning to develop goals, objectives and action plans; skill in analyzing data to monitor progress toward improving and sustaining outcomes; ability to negotiate; ability to supervise subordinate staff (plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance). Assignment – Supervision duties must constitute a significant scope, complexity, difficulty, variety, and be performed at least 25% of the time. Must spend 25% or more of time on administrative and technical supervision over Dietitians at the GS‑12 level or below. Supervisory Dietitians report to the NFS Chief. Decisions are based on intricate, variable data; responsibilities include clinical nutrition section‑specific leadership, full supervisory and personnel management authorities, planning, directing and assessing the work of subordinate staff, establishing a training plan, developing and leading clinical nutrition operations, aligning strategic goals with the NFS department, VISN and national programs, identifying and prioritizing problems, setting long and short‑term goals, developing action plans and analyzing data to evaluate progress, developing and updating policies and procedures, and overseeing regulatory compliance, soliciting support/negotiating with facility managers, and collaborating closely with food operations to enhance the Veteran’s dining experience. Physical Requirements – The work does not inherently include any physical requirements essential for successful job performance that could not otherwise be performed with accommodation or workplace adjustment. A pre‑placement physical examination is not required. Duties Provide clinical nutrition section‑specific leadership, serving as a professional and technical advisor to staff and other health care professionals. Oversee HR staffing, employee relations and labor relations in the Clinical Nutrition section. Exercise a full range of supervisory and personnel management authorities and assume responsibility in planning, directing and assessing the work of subordinate staff. Establish a training plan for the clinical section based on evidence‑based nutrition. Develop and lead clinical nutrition operations, establishing strategic goals and ensuring priorities align with the strategic plan of the NFS department, VISN and national programs. Lead performance improvement efforts within the Clinical Nutrition section, acting on quality improvement data and plans. Identify and prioritize problems, set long‑ and short‑term goals, develop action plans and analyze data to evaluate progress and improve outcomes. Develop and update policies and procedures, and oversee a system for regulatory compliance. Solicit support and negotiate with facility managers to influence decision making and garner support for clinical nutrition operations. Collaborate closely with supervisory dietitians to cover work in all NFS and execute department activities. Perform other related duties as assigned.
