RESPONSIBILITIES Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii’s largest locally owned and operated clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory. DLS is proud to serve the communities of Hawaii, Guam and Saipan and utilizes state‑of‑the‑art testing and value‑based informatics to promote optimal patient care to positively impact patient lives. LOCATION Queen’s Medical Center Punchbowl SCHEDULE Regular Full‑Time Position Must be available for five 8‑hour shifts Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, including occasional holidays. Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs. HIRING RANGE $32.46 to $39.44 hourly Actual pay commensurate with experience JOB SUMMARY Performs histologic techniques, routine and special staining and preparation of surgical and cytologic specimens. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Block and slide preparation. (70%) Embeds tissue specimens and cell blocks from cytology, autopsy and surgical specimens. Sections, stains, mounts, and labels tissue sections. Performs routine and special stains and immunohistochemical stains. Processes tissue for decalcification. Performs quality assurance (QA) sufficiently to determine if tests are within control limits and makes requisite adjustments according to specified procedures. Operates and maintains embedding unit, balance, microtomes, centrifuge, microscope, tissue processor, and other histology equipment. Prepares required solutions and stains. Administrative duties. (25%) Files paraffin blocks and tissue stains. Appropriately discards blocks and tissues after required storage time. Works with management to prepare the assigned area(s) for inspections and regulatory visits. Operates laboratory computer system(s) and performs necessary tasks which may include the use of various functions to resolve problems and extract pertinent information. Oversees the purchase orders of laboratory and office supplies using the Finance Supply Chain Management (FSCM) system. (5%) Unpacks and restocks supplies. Takes inventory and completes ordering supplies. Receives reviews, verifies and files packing slips. Researches and places special request orders. Works with buyers to process the order. Assists in the coordination of product recalls as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned. Job expectations: Demonstrates clear, audience-focused and effective communication with Aloha. JOB DEMANDS Typical Physical Demands: Requires manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Able to distinguish and identify colors. Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, respirator, etc. Able to lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to thirty five pounds occasionally. Able to sit, bend and key up to six hours continuously. Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, static gripping of an object, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens. Requires ground or air travel occasionally. Typical Working Conditions: Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other infectious materials. Generally works in an indoor, air‑conditioned area. QUALIFICATIONS Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution. Experience Preferred: One year recent work experience as a histology technician. Certification Required: Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Skills Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbal and written form. Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team. Excellent customer service skills. Effective coaching skills. Exhibit effective decision making with good judgement. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar application. Ability to work in a fast pace and high-volume environment. Knowledge of quality assurance practices and procedures. Proven ability to problem solve/troubleshoot and provides solutions.
