Staff Software Engineer, Compute Platform

Responsibilities

• Own the design, development, and automation of routing infrastructure for Kubernetes backends at scale.
• Build routing capabilities on Envoy-based reverse proxies, Istio gateways, Ambient mesh, and SPIFFE service authentication.
• Improve the latency, reliability, scalability, and performance of application routing systems across Coinbase’s production environment.
• Shape the paved-road developer experience for operating applications, including AI-driven tooling, processes, and support.
• Partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams on cross-cutting platform requirements.
• Diagnose complex distributed-systems issues, identify root causes, and drive resolutions independently.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering and infrastructure roles.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with application routing technologies, including reverse proxies, ingress controllers, CDN/WAF, and service mesh.
• Proficiency in Go, Python, or Java, with experience building and shipping production-grade infrastructure services.
• Experience scaling backend infrastructure on AWS, with knowledge of networking, compute, and container orchestration services.
• Deep familiarity with the CNCF ecosystem, including Kubernetes, Envoy, and Istio, with experience extending or contributing to these technologies in production.
• Ability to use generative AI responsibly with human oversight and apply AI tooling to infrastructure workflows to improve efficiency, reliability, or developer velocity.
