Payroll Title Job Title: FINANCIAL ANL 2 CX Department: Sociology Hiring Pay Scale: $73,205 - $79,239/year Worksite: Campus Appointment Type: Career Appointment Percent: 100% Union: CX Contract Total Openings: 1 Work Schedule: Days, 8 hrs/day, Mon-Fri Filing Deadline: Fri 6/5/2026 Description The Department of Sociology at UC San Diego maintains a broad undergraduate program in sociology offering student opportunities to specialize, conduct independent research, and participate in Honors and study abroad. The Department of Sociology and the African and African‑American Studies Research Center (AAASRC) collectively have extramural and state funds totaling in excess of $4 million. You will have independent administrative responsibilities for all fiscal activities within these units. Under general supervision of the MSO, you will manage all extramural and state funds, ensure compliance with University and governmental rules, regulations, and policies; oversee the preparation of the department operating budget; allocate resources; participate in short‑ and long‑range financial planning; oversee contract and grant administration; conduct budgetary/financial analytic studies and prepare financial reports; interpret and implement departmental and university fiscal policies; advise faculty, staff, and graduate students on financial issues; be the liaison with campus central offices; serve as Departmental Security Administrator; coordinate department computer replacement schedules; counsel graduate students on research and dissertation support; manage student awards; provide direction to the fiscal assistant and oversee online financial transactions. Responsibilities Overtime and weekends may be required. Qualifications Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Knowledge of university and higher‑education policies and procedures relating to contracts, grants, and state fund accounting. Ability to analyze and interpret applicable policies. In‑depth knowledge of federal and non‑federal agency requirements and regulations for sponsored research through all stages, including Cost Accounting Standards, A‑21, A‑110, A‑133, Federal Demonstration Partnership, etc. Proficiency with accounting and fund management from initial setup to closeout for university departments. Experience in principles and practices of fund accounting, cost analysis and audit procedures; proficiency in accounting principles, business math, bookkeeping for budget planning and analysis, and reconciling discrepancies. Experience in fiscal planning and analysis; ability to gather data, perform basic financial analysis, prepare budgets, identify spending patterns and forecast future expenditures from computer data. Auditing, analyzing, reconciling monthly operating ledgers, forecasts, reports, accrual accounting, staff and faculty salary analysis; skill in projecting salary, benefit, and indirect costs with knowledge of payroll regulations. Advanced spreadsheet and database skills for moderate‑complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reporting. Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet searches, and ability to import data from central databases to Microsoft applications, create and run queries, spreadsheets, and workbooks; operating knowledge of campus financial systems. Intermediate knowledge of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources. Proficiency navigating research administration lifecycles and independently facilitating communication between faculty and the Office of Contracts and Grants or equivalent to resolve award or compliance issues. Mathematical skills for applying fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions and performing statistical calculations. Ability to understand and interpret complex general policy guidelines and make independent decisions. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding financial, payroll, and personnel information. Strong problem‑solving, good judgment, tact, diplomacy, and discretion in handling confidential matters. Knowledge of standard and computerized filing systems and ability to maintain and cross‑reference for rapid retrieval. Interpersonal skills at all levels, excellent service orientation, critical thinking, attention to detail, organizational multitasking in high‑volume environments. Easily builds rapport, maintains cooperative working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and staff. Adaptability to changing priorities, independent work, follow‑through with minimal direction. Effective verbal and written presentation skills. Ability to function as a member of a team. Special Conditions Job offer contingent upon satisfactory background check clearance. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $73,205 – $106,634 (prorated if appointment percentage Hourly Equivalent: $35.06 – $51.07. Factors influencing compensation: experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
