Role Overview:

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) works under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) to help individuals with visual impairments maximize independence in daily living, improve functional performance, and enhance quality of life through individualized intervention and adaptive strategies. COTAs work collaboratively with the supervising OT and the internal interdisciplinary care team.

Principal Accountabilities:

Implement treatment plans developed by supervising OT:  

• Train clients in the use of adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and low vision devices, including CCTVs and PEMs

• Provide instruction and assist clients with low vision in developing skills for activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs)

• Conduct home assessments that focus on environmental modification including lighting adjustments and marking of appliances

• Complete basic assistive device training for phone and computer

• Educate clients, caregivers, and families on compensatory techniques and environmental modifications

• Educate clients, caregivers, and families regarding available community resources

• Document treatment sessions, client progress, and outcomes in accordance with organizational policies

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, orientation and mobility specialists, assistive technology specialists and other rehabilitation professionals

• Maintain client confidentiality and comply with all regulatory and professional standards

• Help clients reach their care goals by providing quality care according to the plan

• Attend community meetings and outreach presentations as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualification Requirements:

SLSBVI seeks a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant professional with demonstrated experience and accomplishments in the principal accountabilities stated for this position. The position requires proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Apricot Data Solutions (or experience working with other EMR platforms), excellent written and oral communication skills, exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail, time management, experience in managing confidential information, and professionalism in interacting with staff colleagues and diverse client populations.

Qualifications:

·         An Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science from an accredited  Occupational Therapy Assistant program

·         Current Missouri Occupational Therapy Assistant license and minimum of one-year experience working as a licensed Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

·         Certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)

·         Experience in low vision rehabilitation or geriatrics is preferred but not required.

·         Valid state driver’s License and proof of current automobile insurance

  Working Conditions :

·         PRN Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

·         Onsite at SLSBVI offices in Brentwood, Missouri, with commitment offsite as needed for client home assessments, community outreach, and agency events

·         Extended periods of sitting; frequent walking indoors/outdoors

·         Employee must be able to lift/transport a light (1-20 lbs.) load of equipment or materials at times

·         Frequent bending, reaching forward/overhead. Simple grasping, pushing/pulling Employee may be required to do simple grasping and pushing/pulling.
