Job Title: QA/QC Lead – Fabrication Shop Job Description

The QA/QC Lead is responsible for overseeing all quality assurance and quality control activities within a mechanical contractor’s fabrication shop. This role ensures that all welded assemblies consistently meet company standards, customer specifications, and applicable regulatory requirements. The QA/QC Lead supervises and supports a team of eight welders, providing inspection, documentation, technical guidance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across high‑purity mechanical fabrication projects. This position is ideal for a detail‑oriented, highly technical professional with strong leadership capabilities and extensive experience in welding and mechanical fabrication.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily QA/QC operations within the fabrication shop to ensure all welded components meet internal and external quality standards.
• Provide guidance and oversight to a team of eight welders, ensuring strict adherence to welding procedures, process parameters, and safety practices.
• Interpret engineering drawings, piping isometrics, and specifications to verify compliance with project and customer requirements.
• Perform visual weld inspections, dimensional checks, and verification of weld parameters in accordance with Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) requirements.
• Maintain and optimize weld traceability, inspection records, and testing documentation to support accurate reporting and audits.
• Review and approve weld logs, material certificates, non‑conformance reports, and final turnover packages for completeness and accuracy.
• Conduct in‑process and final inspections using appropriate tools, gauges, and QA/QC methodologies to confirm product quality.
• Ensure compliance with ASME Section IX, company standard operating procedures, and customer‑specific quality standards.
• Oversee welder qualification and re‑certification processes, ensuring all welders remain current and competent in required procedures.
• Support the development and continuous improvement of quality procedures, weld procedures, and inspection criteria.
• Utilize QA/QC and production quality software platforms for documentation, reporting, and workflow management.
• Train shop personnel on the proper use of digital quality tools and ensure accurate, real‑time data entry in QA/QC systems.
• Identify quality trends, recurring issues, and improvement opportunities within welding processes and fabrication workflows.
• Lead root‑cause analysis and implement corrective actions to resolve quality issues and prevent recurrence.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, project management, and fabrication teams to optimize quality outcomes and project delivery.
• Apply construction and inspection knowledge to structural steel and pipe welding activities to maintain high standards of workmanship.

Essential Skills

• Active Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
• Minimum 5+ years of QA/QC experience within a welding or mechanical fabrication environment.
• Strong understanding of ASME Section IX, welding metallurgy, orbital welding processes, and sanitary fabrication practices.
• Experience using digital QA/QC systems such as ISNetworld, Procore, Bluebeam, WeldTrace, or comparable platforms.
• Strong documentation skills with the ability to maintain accurate inspection and testing records.
• Clear and effective communication skills for working with welders, engineering, and project teams.
• Proven leadership skills with experience directing and supporting welding personnel.
• Hands‑on experience with structural steel and pipe welding inspection in a construction or fabrication context.
• Demonstrated ability to ensure compliance with welding standards and quality requirements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Past experience in a fabrication shop supervisory or lead role.
• Familiarity with GMP environments and pharmaceutical or high‑purity applications.
• Understanding of automated weld inspection equipment and weld data logging.
• Exceptional attention to detail in reviewing welds, documentation, and quality records.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple inspections and documentation tasks.
• Ability to coach and mentor welders, supporting skill development and adherence to procedures.
• Solid understanding of welding processes and standards compliance across various materials and applications.
• Analytical mindset with strong problem‑solving skills for identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven fabrication environment.
• Pharmaceutical industry experience related to high‑purity or sanitary fabrication is a plus.

Work Environment

The role is based on‑site in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven fabrication shop environment. The QA/QC Lead collaborates closely with engineering, project management, and fabrication teams to support high‑purity mechanical fabrication and construction activities. The work involves regular use of advanced digital QA/QC systems such as ISNetworld, Procore, Bluebeam, and WeldTrace for workflow management, documentation, and reporting. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to quality and safety standards, with frequent inspections of structural steel and pipe welding. The dress code is typical of a fabrication shop, focusing on safety‑oriented attire and professional presentation.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Lebanon, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
