Interventional Radiologist
Speare Memorial Hospital
Interventional Radiologist
Speare Memorial Hospital is seeking a qualified, board-certified or board-eligible radiologist to provide per diem interventional radiology services. This position is dedicated exclusively to performing interventional radiology procedures in support of the hospital's diagnostic imaging and patient care services.
The Per Diem Interventional Radiologist will perform image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within their scope of training and clinical privileges. This position does not include responsibility for interpreting, reading, or providing diagnostic reports for radiographic or other diagnostic imaging studies. Diagnostic image interpretation will remain the responsibility of separately designated radiology coverage.
The successful candidate will collaborate with referring providers, nursing staff, radiologic technologists, and other members of the care team to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality procedural care.
About Speare Memorial Hospital
Speare Memorial Hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital serving dozens of communities in the Lakes Region. We are passionately committed to providing exceptional, local care to our friends, families, neighbors, and communities at large.
Mission: To work together to serve the needs of our patients and community.
Vision: A community where all can achieve optimal health.
Values: Kindness, Collaboration, Patient & Family-Centered, Safety, Excellence, Efficiency, and Professionalism.
Interventional Radiology Services
- Perform scheduled and, when mutually agreed upon, urgent image-guided interventional radiology procedures consistent with training, experience, and hospital-approved clinical privileges.
- Perform procedures such as ultrasound-guided biopsies, fine-needle aspirations, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and other approved image-guided procedures based on the hospital's clinical needs and the physician's competencies.
- Evaluate patients before procedures, including reviewing relevant clinical information, laboratory results, imaging findings, and indications for intervention.
- Obtain informed consent and discuss the risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected outcomes of procedures with patients or their authorized representatives.
- Provide appropriate procedural documentation, post-procedure instructions, and recommendations for follow-up care.
- Recognize and manage procedural complications and coordinate escalation or transfer when clinically indicated.
- Ensure appropriate communication of significant findings or complications to the referring provider and other members of the care team.
- Comply with hospital policies, medical staff bylaws, clinical protocols, infection prevention standards, radiation safety requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and other clinical performance improvement activities as required.
- Support appropriate patient selection, procedural safety checks, and continuity of care before and after procedures.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the hospital's electronic health record and other required systems.
Professional Collaboration
- Coordinate with Radiology leadership and departmental staff regarding procedure scheduling, equipment requirements, patient preparation, and procedural workflow.
- Collaborate with referring physicians to determine the appropriateness of requested procedures and establish appropriate follow-up plans.
- Maintain professional communication with patients, families, hospital staff, and referring providers.
Explicit Scope Exclusion: Diagnostic Image Interpretation
This position is limited to interventional radiology procedures and associated clinical responsibilities. The physician will not be responsible for:
- Reading or interpreting routine diagnostic imaging studies, including radiographs, CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, or other diagnostic examinations.
- Providing formal diagnostic imaging interpretations or signing diagnostic imaging reports, except for documentation and communication specifically required as part of an interventional procedure.
- Providing general diagnostic radiology coverage or serving as the hospital's diagnostic radiologist of record.
Any interpretation of imaging necessary to plan, perform, or safely complete an interventional procedure remains within the physician's procedural responsibilities and granted privileges. This does not constitute an obligation to provide formal diagnostic interpretations for the hospital's general imaging workload.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For:
Education
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of an accredited diagnostic radiology residency and appropriate fellowship training or equivalent documented qualifications and experience in interventional radiology.
- Board certification or board eligibility in Diagnostic Radiology, with appropriate interventional radiology training and demonstrated procedural competency, consistent with hospital medical staff requirements.
Licensure/Certifications/Registrations
- Current BLS and/or ACLS certification, as required by hospital policy and the procedures performed.
- Current, unrestricted New Hampshire medical license.
- Current DEA registration, as applicable to the scope of practice.
Physical and Clinical Requirements
- Ability to perform the physical and technical requirements of interventional procedures, including appropriate use of procedural imaging equipment and personal protective equipment.
- Ability to respond appropriately to procedural emergencies and complications.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Eligibility for appointment to the Speare Memorial Hospital Medical Staff and approval for the specific clinical privileges required.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, clinical quality, and collaborative practices.
