2nd Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (apx 50% with Security Clearance

Position Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking for a 2nd Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia. Travel: 50% within and outside of the continental United States. Work Schedule: Monday thru Saturday, 10 hours a day (as needed). Responsibilities Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including interior communications. Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels. Utilize troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance skills for electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities. Apply basic and some advanced technical knowledge to solve routine problems by interpreting manufacturers' manuals or similar documents. Use familiarity with circuit interrelationships and judgment in planning work sequence, and selecting tools, testing instruments. Work under immediate supervision and seek technical guidance from supervisor or higher-level technician as needed. Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values. Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for fleet modernization on U.S. Navy surface ships. Perform duties for layout, fabrication, and installation of electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic aboard Navy vessels. Read and interpret schematics and blueprints to perform work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents, and reports. Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables; assist with diagnosing equipment to eliminate problems efficiently. Remove and install cables found overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck. Repair and replace cables/connectors. Apply understanding of production processes to complete complicated and non-routine tasks related to installations on shipboard systems and equipment at company and/or field locations under established quality and safety procedures. Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications. Maintain effective supervisor and manager communications and relations. Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels. Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for a complete installation. Qualifications U.S. citizen. Must have or obtain a DoD Secret clearance. High school diploma, GED or industrial/trade school certificate. Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in operation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels; MSC or Maritime vessels, and practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems and equipment. Familiar with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems: MC (General Announcing/Mass Communications), HYDRA (Hierarchical Yet Dynamically Reprogrammable Architecture), IVN (Integrated Voice Network), IVCN (Integrated Voice Communications Network), SATCC (Shipboard Air Traffic Control Communications), SIWCS (Shipwide Inter Wireless Communication System). Ability to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential for work on boarded U.S. Naval vessels or government assigned work. Ability to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request. Willingness to travel outside the Suffolk, Virginia area if required. Prior experience with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors. Possess or provide trade-specific hand tools. Experience working in a team environment and communicate effectively with others. Understand and accomplish NSI 009-73 requirements: inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment; cable installations including banding, terminal boxes, connection boxes, connectors, equipment, penetrations, cableways, hangers; MCT, MCP, stuffing tube opening, packing, closing and testing; bonding and grounding of electrical equipment; NSI 009-25 – air testing of penetrations; electrical troubleshooting and testing with multimeters and megohmmeters; assistance with troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical distribution systems and associated equipment and cabling; experience with cable removal and installation including proper methods of opening and securing various types of cable penetrations; operating under instruction to remove, install and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, cable penetrations and equipment aboard naval vessels; familiarity with reading electrical drawings and schematics; knowledge of proper and safe usage of multimeters and megger; familiarity with NAVSEA Standard items. Preferred Qualifications Candidates with current NAVSEA Multipin Connector Certifications (NSI 009-73). Candidates with current NAVSEA Fiber Optic certification (NSI 009-123). Candidates with NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications. Candidates who have graduated from or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program. Active DoD Secret clearance preferred. OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus. Microsoft Office knowledge a plus. Physical Demands Lift, carry, or transport heavy equipment and boxes (minimum 30 lbs). Work on and climb ladders; operate in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Perform duties that may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May be required to ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. 50% travel within and outside the continental United States.
