PRN Surgical Technologist

Position Title: Surgical Technologist – PRN
Employment Status: PRN / As Needed
Location: Avalon Medical Center, Alpharetta, Ga

Position Summary

The PRN Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the surgical team in providing safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care throughout the perioperative period. The Surgical Technologist works collaboratively with surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesia personnel, and other members of the surgical team to prepare the operating room, maintain a sterile field, anticipate the needs of the surgical team, and ensure appropriate handling and accounting of surgical instruments, supplies, medications, specimens, and equipment.

The position primarily supports outpatient plastic and cosmetic surgical procedures and is expected to demonstrate professional judgment, attention to detail, strong knowledge of aseptic technique, and a commitment to patient safety and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities

• Review the daily surgical schedule and prepare operating rooms according to the procedures scheduled.
• Ensure required instruments, equipment, implants, supplies, and medications are available and properly prepared.
• Perform appropriate operating room preparation, including cleaning, disinfection, and setup according to facility policies.
• Verify that surgical instruments and equipment are functioning properly and report deficiencies promptly.
• Assist with positioning and preparation of patients while maintaining patient safety, privacy, dignity, and comfort.
• Participate in surgical site verification and other applicable patient safety processes.
• Assist with surgical counts and other required safety checks prior to the procedure.

Intraoperative Responsibilities

• Scrub for surgical procedures and maintain a sterile field throughout the case.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and provide appropriate instruments, supplies, sutures, implants, and equipment.
• Maintain strict adherence to aseptic technique and infection prevention practices.
• Perform instrument, sponge, needle, and other required counts in collaboration with the circulating nurse.
• Properly handle and identify specimens in accordance with facility policy.
• Assist with surgical equipment and technology as needed.
• Monitor the sterile field and immediately address breaks in sterile technique.
• Maintain organized and efficient surgical tables and supplies throughout the procedure.
• Assist with specimen handling, surgical dressings, drains, and other postoperative needs as directed.
• Communicate promptly with the circulating nurse and other members of the surgical team regarding patient, equipment, supply, or procedural concerns.

PRN Position Requirements

Because this is a PRN position, the Surgical Technologist must:

• Accept scheduled PRN assignments as mutually agreed upon with the facility.
• Provide appropriate notice when unable to fulfill an accepted assignment.
• Maintain competency and required education while working on a PRN basis.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
• Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred; certification requirements will be maintained in accordance with applicable law and facility policy.
• Current BLS certification required.
• Previous operating room/surgical technologist experience preferred.
• Plastic surgery experience preferred but not required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, infection prevention, and operating room procedures.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced outpatient surgical environment.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

• Stand and walk for extended periods during surgical procedures.
• Frequently lift, carry, push, and/or pull equipment and supplies.
• Assist with patient positioning and transfers as required.
• Reach, bend, stoop, kneel, and perform repetitive movements.
• Safely handle surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
• Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
• Work in an environment involving exposure to blood, body fluids, surgical smoke, chemicals, disinfectants, and other potentially hazardous materials while following established safety precautions.

Work Environment

The Surgical Technologist works primarily in an outpatient operating room environment. The position may involve exposure to blood and body fluids, sharps, surgical smoke, chemicals, anesthetic gases, infectious materials, and other occupational hazards. Appropriate safety precautions and personal protective equipment must be utilized at all times.
