Pathology Specialist

Summary This position functions as an assistant to an anatomic pathologist at the Nashville VA Medical Center in Nashville - TN. Qualifications This position requires a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field – health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work. The degree must be from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time it was obtained. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS 7) in Federal Service is required, including performing all elements of gross examination and sectioning of surgical pathology specimens; performing or requesting specialized tests such as histochemical and immunohistochemical stains, flow cytometry, and quality control; maintaining procedures and protocols up to date with regulatory criteria; orienting and training new employees and residents; assisting with equipment evaluation and supply ordering; assisting in autopsy performance and related duties; and maintaining the autopsy suite in clean working order. Alternatively, substitution of education for experience is possible with two years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to a master’s degree, or a combination of graduate education and experience that meets total experience requirements, with graduate courses directly related to the work. Duties Not a virtual position – must live within or be willing to relocate within a commutable distance of the duty location. Assisting with evaluation and implementation of new equipment and ordering supplies when needed. Embedding, cutting, staining, and labeling routine histology; performing aspirate smears and clot sections for bone marrow biopsies. Preparing tissues and slides for intraoperative assessment by frozen sections. Photographing gross specimens. Investigating and resolving problems, including quality control assurance activities related to surgical pathology. Assisting in the goals of Anatomic Pathology by performing any other duties deemed necessary for patient care. Playing a central role in education and training of residents, medical specialists, and students regarding surgical pathology and autopsy. Evaluating new procedures for incorporation into the lab and assessing their effectiveness once implemented. Assisting in the collection and interpretation of data for Anatomic Pathology Quality Assurance (QA) programs. Performing other administrative and laboratory duties as needed.
