DECKHAND

JOB SUMMARY

A deckhand performs a range of basic duties essential to the operations and maintenance of the vessel. This position is under the direct supervision of the vessels' assigned Captain(s) and is integral in keeping the vessel clean, safe, seaworthy, maintaining a lookout, loading cargo, assisting passengers and responding to any vessel emergencies that may occur.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be 18 or older to board a vessel.
  • Must be able to meet all physical qualifications per company guidelines and USCG regulations for a medical certificate as applicable.
  • Must have Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be able to attain it.
  • Valid, USCG approved, CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in the English Language per USCG regulations.
  • Must be able to be away for extended periods of time.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record is required for the use of company vehicles.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The deckhand will actively participate in all emergency drills conducted on the vessel and always promote a safe working environment and comply with all company and state/federal regulations and procedures.
  • Clean and maintain the galley, heads, passenger quarters, decks and engine room.
  • Assist in the transfer of passengers to and from the vessel.
  • When necessary, and as directed by the captain, assist in the transfer of cargo.
  • Assist in the transfer of fuel, water, or supplies.
  • Safely moor the vessel under the direction of the vessel Captain.
  • Perform engine room inspections and maintenance as needed.
  • Care for tools and equipment for the boat.
  • Work as directed by the Captain or Wheelman on Watch.
  • Maintain vessel by performing scheduled maintenance and housekeeping (includes chipping/painting).
  • Inspection, maintenance and repair (when possible) of shipboard systems and machinery.
  • Ensure sufficient engine room stores and spares.
  • Inspections and maintenance of fixed firefighting systems including the pumps and associated piping valves.
  • The operation of the engine room machinery in accordance with the manufacturer recommendations and company policy.
  • Planning and scheduling of work to be performed safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere to company safety policy and procedures, environmental rules and Government regulations. Learn safety rules and safe use of equipment.
  • Report immediately to the captain, incidents, problems, weaknesses, hazards, or unsafe conditions which could cause damage to the vessel or other vessels or harm to crew members, passengers and others.
  • Cooperate with other crew members, give them a helping hand by assisting them in doing their tasks and always strive to perform assigned duties and tasks promptly and efficiently.
SHIFT INFORMATION

The standard work schedule for a Deckhand is 14 days on the vessel and 7 days off or 28 days on the vessel and 14 days off, however this work schedule may vary. The daily work is for a 12-hour watch.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Applicants must meet the physical demands while performing the tasks required for, transferring rigging, laying rigging, transferring cargo, routine housekeeping duties, general maintenance, and assisting in the navigation of the boat. These duties will be performed during all types of weather, night and day, and while the vessel is underway. Incumbents are required to use hand tools, power tools, painting equipment, and personal protective gear. Capable of working long shifts under adverse conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; precarious places; fumes or airborne particles. Subject to indoor/outdoor conditions, onshore and offshore, rain, heat and cold, rough seas and extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be loud on occasion.

Heavy Work as defined by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles.
