Peer Support Specialist (Temporary)

Location:  Durham, NC
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Hours: 20-40 hours per week
Pay Rate: $25.00-$31.00 per hour (depending on experience)

Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and community-focused individual to support people experiencing homelessness, substance use challenges, and/or mental health recovery needs. This position combines peer support, resource navigation, and case management activities to help individuals connect with services and move toward their personal goals.

Key Responsibilities for the Peer Support Specialist

• Provide peer support and encouragement to individuals seeking assistance.
• Assist with case management, resource coordination, and service referrals.
• Support individuals in accessing housing, behavioral health, healthcare, benefits, and other community resources.
• Build trusting relationships that promote recovery, wellness, and self-determination.
• Conduct follow-up outreach and maintain accurate documentation.
• Collaborate with community partners and multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care.

Minimum Qualifications for the Peer Support Specialist

• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience providing case management, peer support, community outreach, social services, or human services work related to homelessness, substance use recovery, mental health recovery, or other relevant life experiences.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Ability to successfully pass a drug screening 
• Ability to pass a criminal background check 

Preferred Qualifications

• Current Peer Support Specialist Certification.
• Experience working with individuals experiencing housing instability, behavioral health concerns, substance use challenges, or crisis situations.
• Knowledge of local community resources and service systems.

Training Opportunity

Candidates who have relevant case management experience, but who are not yet certified as a Peer Support Specialist, will be considered. We are willing to support the selected candidate in completing the required Peer Support Specialist training and certification.
