Director of Secondary Education

The Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning provides leadership and oversight for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the district's curriculum for grades 6-12. Serving as a key bridge between the central office and school-based leadership, this role ensures that all secondary curricula are rigorously aligned with state standards and district goals while fostering a culture of thinking, innovation, and ensuring best practice in secondary instruction. The Director collaborates with building administrators, department chairs, teachers, instructional coaches, and support staff to analyze student performance data, improve instructional and assessment quality, integrate effective teaching strategies, and enhance student achievement. The Director empowers secondary educators and administrators through targeted professional development, the adoption of high-quality instructional materials, and the continuous refinement of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to ensure every student is prepared for post-secondary success.
Responsibilities:- Develop, implement, and monitor the 6-12 curriculum to ensure alignment with Ohio Learning Standards, a culture of thinking, graduation requirements, and career readiness.
- Collaborate with building administrators to support professional development, instructional practices, implementation of high quality instructional materials, and school improvement goals across middle and high school grades.
- Analyze student achievement and growth data in grades 6-12 to identify trends, gaps, and areas for intervention and extension.
- Ensure the implementation and monitoring of the District One Plan goals, student and adult measures, and action steps.
- Lead high quality instructional materials review, selection, and adoption processes.
- Facilitate instructional leadership collaborative meetings that focus on secondary education.
- Ensure integration of technology, career readiness, social-emotional learning, and evidence based practices across the secondary curriculum.
- Monitor and implement compliance with state, federal, and district requirements related to secondary teaching and learning.
- Collaborate with district leaders to serve and advocate for all learners.
- Participate in district committees and initiatives related to instructional improvement, assessment, and professional development.
- Stay current on educational research, trends, and best practices in secondary curriculum and instruction.
- Provide recommendations and reports to district leadership and the school board regarding curriculum initiatives and student outcomes.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
Required
- Master's degree in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
- Valid Ohio teaching license and administrative license
- Extensive experience as a secondary classroom teacher
- Knowledge of Ohio Learning Standards for secondary grades, high quality instructional materials, and evidence based practices.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience analyzing secondary student data to inform instructional decisions.
- Administrative experience in secondary teaching and learning.
- Experience designing and delivering professional development for secondary educators.
- Knowledge of technology integration, assessment tools, and data-driven instruction.
- Familiarity with the MTSS framework, PBIS, career/college readiness initiatives, and differentiated instruction strategies for secondary students.
- Frequent standing, walking, and moving throughout classrooms, buildings, and district offices.
- Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional bending, kneeling, or sitting on the floor when observing or modeling secondary instruction.
- Use of hands and fingers to operate computers, tablets, and office equipment.
- Ability to visually and auditorily monitor secondary classroom instruction and student engagement.
- Ability to maintain composure in high-activity or high-stress instructional settings.
- Work primarily occurs in grades 6-12 school buildings, classrooms, district offices, and occasionally off-site professional learning locations.
- Frequent interaction with teachers, instructional coaches, department chairs, administrators, and support staff.
- May be required to move quickly between locations within schools and the district.
- Occasional exposure to classrooms with high levels of student activity.
- The schedule generally follows the district calendar, with occasional evening or weekend meetings, workshops, or professional development sessions.
- Must maintain confidentiality regarding student data, teacher evaluations, and curriculum decisions.
