Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Senior Designer

Job Description

The Mechanical Senior Designer oversees multiple concurrent projects involving mechanical components for natural gas, hydrocarbon, and industrial facilities. This role leads mechanical design efforts from conceptual development through detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional construction drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, details, bills of material, and isometrics. The Mechanical Senior Designer serves as a technical expert, supports the engineering discipline, and provides leadership and direction to designers and drafters to ensure projects remain on task, on schedule, and compliant with applicable standards and client requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage mechanical design team members, including planning resource utilization and assigning projects to available designers.
  • Assign, monitor, and check design activities based on project estimated hours, scope, and schedule to ensure timely and accurate delivery.
  • Create conceptual mechanical designs during project development for natural gas, hydrocarbon, and industrial projects.
  • Produce detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional construction drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, details, bills of material, and isometrics from models and sketches under the direction of an engineer.
  • Assist engineers with Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for oil and gas and pipeline-related projects, including compressor stations and associated facilities.
  • Check the work of less experienced drafting and design personnel and provide coaching, guidance, and training to support their development.
  • Ensure all drawings and design deliverables comply with internal engineering standards and client specifications, as well as relevant industry codes and regulations.
  • Exercise resourcefulness and ingenuity to resolve complex technical issues related to mechanical design, materials, and equipment in oil and gas facilities.
  • Coordinate closely with other managers, engineers, and designers to complete project assignments and maintain alignment across disciplines.
  • Review and approve timecards for assigned team members to support accurate project tracking and resource management.
  • Assist in the interview process for new drafting and design hires by evaluating technical skills and team fit.
  • Apply knowledge of pipeline engineering, compressor station design, P&IDs, schematics, and mechanical design principles to deliver high-quality project outcomes.

Essential Skills

  • Associate’s degree or certificate in CAD, Drafting, or Design from an accredited vocational school, college, or university.
  • 10+ years of experience using AutoCAD and CADWorx software for oil and gas mechanical design.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical design for natural gas and hydrocarbon projects, including pipeline and compressor station facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulations for the oil and gas industry.
  • Knowledge of mechanical materials and equipment commonly used in oil and gas facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, schematics, and specifications with a high level of accuracy.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and CADWorx for creating detailed mechanical models and drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Teams, and Word for documentation, collaboration, and reporting.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with careful attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with engineers, designers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Leica CloudWorx is preferred and considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in pipeline engineering, oil and gas facility design, and mechanical design for compressor stations.
  • Experience developing and interpreting P&IDs and schematics for mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and train junior designers and drafters.
  • Experience participating in FEED studies and early-phase project development.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Work Environment

The role is part of an engineering team of approximately 15 people, providing a collaborative and close-knit environment where team members support each other and share technical expertise. The organization emphasizes a growing, stable structure with a family-type culture that values strong relationships, open communication, and mutual respect. Work involves regular use of AutoCAD, CADWorx, Microsoft Excel, Teams, and Word, as well as interaction with engineers and designers across disciplines. The position is office-based within an engineering setting, focused on design and coordination activities rather than field construction work. The environment supports professional development, teamwork, and long-term career growth, with a comprehensive benefits package available to employees.
