***CDL Positions Hiring Incentive*** Effective 12.13.2022

Eligible newly hired candidates hired into a position requiring a CDL will receive an incremental hiring incentive upon satisfactory job performance after completion of 3, 6, and 12 months of service. Valid Driver's License: $1,500 one time hiring incentive to be paid in $500 increments (not added to base salary). This is a one-time incentive, and you will not be eligible for an additional incentive when you obtain your required CDL license. Class A or Class B CDL: $3,000 one time hiring incentive to be paid in $1,000 increments (not added to base salary). Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager.

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to service, maintain, and repair various county vehicle and specialty equipment. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting in diagnosing and correcting mechanical problems with vehicles and equipment, performing preventive maintenance and repair on various specialty equipment, and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or equivalent with two years of automotive and heavy equipment / fleet maintenance and repair to include diesel and/or truck repair or related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have the ability to obtain a Georgia Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of date of hire. Must possess or have the ability to obtain specialized training and/or certifications required of the position. Criminal background must indicate eligibility for the supervision of inmates. Must obtain security training for the supervision of inmate workers as set forth by the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures with six (6) months of date or hire or first available opportunity.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Files repair reports with Shop Foreman. Performs routine service duties (e.g., relines brakes; performs tune-ups and oil changes; replaces filters; lubricates chassis; replaces antifreeze, air filters, drive belts, and tires; performs heating and air-conditioning repairs). Performs general repairs; tests and recharges/replaces batteries; replaces water pumps, fuel pumps, radiators, brake air lines, hydraulics, electrical wiring, headlights and warning lights. Maintains communications equipment. Performs metal fabrication. Fabricates high pressure hoses, fittings, and hydraulic hoses, and conducts field repairs as needed. Conducts welding on steel and aluminum and ensures repairs are made as required. Rebuilds air, water, and hydraulic valves. Sets up tools and equipment; procures parts and supplies for repairs; and cleans shop area, parts room, restrooms and office. Performs the duties of the Shop Foreman as needed in their absence. Assists with development of guidelines of operation for new equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on bulldozers, graders, backhoes, tractors, boom trucks, dump trucks, front- and rear-loading refuse trucks (e.g., checks antifreeze, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulic system, tires, and safety equipment). Performs corrective maintenance procedures (e.g., transmissions, hydraulic and electrical system, and various degrees of engine repair). Performs a variety of engine diagnosis procedures. Operates service trucks and on-board equipment. Completes and signs work orders according to services rendered. Prepares vehicle maintenance reports. Welds and fabricates parts as needed. Performs the duties of Automotive Mechanic as needed. Oversees the work of inmates. Performs other related duties as required.

(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including fire extinguishers, drill press, battery chargers and testers, jacks, air wrenches, mechanics tools and diagnostic instruments. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for heavy work. DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to hear, speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving / receiving assignments and/or directions to co-workers / from supervisors. LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of electrical diagrams, vehicle maintenance manuals and informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to prepare preventive maintenance inspection/repair records, pump service test forms, emergency generator maintenance and test records, fire extinguisher repair logs, and gas reports using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence. INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgments in the absence of management. VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in technical languages including mechanics' terminology. NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; interpret graphs; and compute ratio and proportion. FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with fire, mechanical, electrical, and mechanics equipment and tools. MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using fire, electrical, automotive, and heavy mechanics' equipment. Requires the ability to lift, bend, push, pull, manipulate equipment/tools and objects as the position necessitates. MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as fire extinguishers, drill press, battery chargers and testers, jacks, air wrenches, mechanics tools and diagnostic instruments. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
