Accounting & Audit Manager — Greater Houston Area Some accounting jobs keep the books. This one serves a public mission. Our client is a well-established governmental entity in the greater Houston area with an environmental mission at its core — and behind that mission sits a finance operation that has to be just as sound as the science. We're searching for an Accounting & Audit Manager to lead the organization's general accounting, payroll, and financial reporting functions — a high-visibility role reporting directly to the Finance Director, with a seat at the table alongside executive leadership and the governing board. Why this role? Real ownership, real visibility. You'll lead the annual audit as the auditor's first point of contact, drive the ACFR from preparation through board acceptance, and present directly to the governing board. Breadth you won't find in a corporate silo. Fund accounting, bond program compliance, internal service funds, disaster/grant accounting, intercompany work across multiple facilities — no two months look alike. Build people, not just processes. You'll supervise, mentor, and develop a small accounting team while serving as the go-to finance expert for managers across the organization. Shape what comes next. The organization is implementing a new enterprise-wide ERP system, and you'll be a key voice in how accounting and payroll make the transition. What you bring Bachelor's degree in accounting and 5–10 years of professional accounting experience; governmental accounting or environmental, water district industry experience preferred. Prior supervisory or management experience; public accounting background in Governmental audits strongly preferred (CPA, CPA-eligible, CIA, or CGFO a plus). Sound command of GAAP and GASB, governmental fund accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, and accrual accounting — plus ERP experience (Workday preferred). Sharp attention to detail, a deadline-driven mindset, advanced Excel skills, and the communication chops to translate complex financials for executives and a governing board.
