Position Overview

Mower County Health & Human Services is seeking a Public Health Nurse/BSN to perform professional public health and nursing services in support of specialized public health programs and initiatives.

This position provides nursing services to individuals, families, and communities and plays an important role in promoting health, preventing disease, improving access to care, and connecting individuals with appropriate community resources. Responsibilities may include health assessments, case management, health education, home visits, public clinics, disease prevention, community health investigations, and collaboration with medical and community partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Public Health Nurse/BSN include:

• Perform age-appropriate health assessments for individuals, families, and communities.

• Identify health concerns and provide case management services.

• Make referrals to community resources and assist underserved populations with accessing appropriate care.

• Provide holistic, person-centered interventions.

• Provide health and disease prevention education to individuals of various ages.

• Coordinate and conduct public clinics focused on education, treatment, screening, and prevention of community health concerns.

• Investigate community health threats and provide community education.

• Serve as an internal resource regarding assigned program rules, regulations, and documentation requirements.

• Provide oversight, training, and mentoring to staff working within assigned programs.

• Prepare and maintain service records, case histories, outcome reports, and statistical reports.

• Ensure services and documentation comply with applicable protocols.

• Collaborate with medical providers and community partners to promote and protect public health.

• Participate in program planning, trainings, orientations, and emergency preparedness planning related to public health threats.

• Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).

Required Licenses/Certifications:

• Public Health Nurse Certification

• Registered Nurse License

• Valid driver’s license or evidence of equal mobility

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate should possess knowledge and skills in areas including:

• Nursing principles and practices

• Medical terminology

• Case management

• Health care services and medical treatment protocols

• Medical testing and administering treatments

• Assessing illnesses and injuries

• Preparing medical case files and histories

• Referring clients to appropriate outside resources

• Applicable federal and state policies and regulations

• Crisis intervention strategies

• Working effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and language backgrounds and individuals experiencing multiple medical, social, or psychological challenges

• Collaboration with coworkers, medical providers, the public, and local, state, and federal partners

Work Environment

This position includes both office-based work and travel to locations such as client homes and public meeting sites. The position involves regular interaction with members of the public, County staff, and outside agencies.

Work may involve occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds, exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids, interaction with individuals who may be emotionally charged or experiencing challenging circumstances, and working under deadlines.
