Job Summary Respiratory Therapist – Full Time (72 hrs per pay period), Night Shift – Bronson Battle Creek. Under general supervision from the Respiratory Manager and/or Director, and in accordance with policies and guidelines established within the organization. Execute respiratory care for patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities; provide education and serve as a resource to providers, nurses, and other staff. Responsibilities Initiate and administer respiratory therapy to patients per provider prescription and established policies. Perform and evaluate blood gases, review results, and communicate findings to providers and nursing staff. Communicate ventilator recommendations to providers and nursing based on patient evaluation and blood gases. Check provider orders, ensure they are complete, and administer therapy accordingly. Perform respiratory therapies (age‑specific) in accordance with provider orders, protocols, or guidelines. Explain therapy to the patient in understandable terms according to age/learning capabilities. Assess the patient’s response to therapy and make recommendations to the provider or according to protocol guidelines. Administer, assess, and titrate oxygen therapy; modify therapy according to respiratory protocols. Notify manager, nursing personnel, and providers of any adverse patient reactions. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assist with “Code Blue” as necessary; arrive promptly and provide life support per BLS, ACLS, NRP, and PALS guidelines. Assist providers or perform tracheal intubation if competency is complete. Maintain artificial airways (endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes) in accordance with department policy (suctioning, securing, repositioning). Use infant and pediatric resuscitation equipment appropriately in emergency situations. Assist with patient and family education. Perform basic pulmonary function testing, EKGs, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end‑tidal CO₂ monitoring, and transcutaneous oximetry per departmental policies. Assist with bedside bronchoscopies, intubations, and extubations per departmental policies. Perform naso‑tracheal, endo‑tracheal suction, and sample collections per departmental policies. Assist with patient transport via walking, wheelchair, gurney, or crib; may assist with ambulance transports within one facility to another. Accurately communicate patient diagnosis and therapy at shift change reports. Accurately charge patients for all therapies performed. Supervise and instruct Respiratory Care students; complete preceptor course and develop student skills. Attend in‑services and online learning, maintaining compliance with education requirements. Participate in departmental and hospital‑wide quality assurance and improvement initiatives. Demonstrate adherence to the Commitment to Customer Service standards, including the Interaction Process and Service Recovery “AAA Action Plan”. Qualifications Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS); Bachelor’s degree preferred. Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan. For hires after 2004, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials required within one year of hire. BLS certification required within three months of hire. ACLS, PALS, and NRP (site‑specific) certifications required within one year of hire (for BLH only). For BLH: Associate’s degree or graduation from a hospital‑based program and five years of experience; Bachelor’s preferred. Physical Demands Continual mental and visual fatigue associated with wide variety of duties and frequent, significant deadlines. Up to 40% of work time involves operating a personal computer or CRT. Regular standing or walking; lifting light‑weight objects up to 50 lbs; assisting with heavier patient movements. Occasional stooping, crouching, or kneeling; quick movements to gather equipment and medication in emergency situations. Perform CPR and respond promptly to emergency situations. Shift & Benefits Shift: 12‑hour Night Shift (full time). Weekly hours: 36. Sign‑On Bonus (external candidates only): up to $5,000.
