Maintenance Mechanic

Job Title Maintenance Mechanic Responsibilities The Maintenance Mechanic supports plant production machinery, equipment, building, and other systems throughout the site to maintain optimum operating conditions and plant productivity. This includes troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining a variety of production machinery and equipment (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic), performing upgrades, improvements, and assigned projects as required. Principal Accountabilities Receives and performs job assignments through work orders, sketches, PM schedules, blueprints or verbal instructions. Responds to emergency requests for repairs/replacements. Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains production machinery and equipment. Installs, modifies, relocates machinery and equipment and performs fabrication, welding, mechanical, electrical, electronics, plumbing, carpentry, or other maintenance skills. Repairs and modifies buildings and plant systems as required. Reads and interprets manuals, schematics, blueprints, drawings, and other written instructions. Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance of assigned plant equipment, including gauges, filters, fluid levels, cooling tower, gas burners, air compressors, chillers, etc. Requisitions and secures materials, tools, and supplies needed for assignments. Uses measuring and testing equipment to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment and systems. Uses a range of shop, hand, and power tools common to the trades applied. Maintains specified records, logs and system readings. Troubleshooting of components such as rolls, shafts, bearings, drive belts, drive chains and gear boxes with basic mechanic’s hand and power tools. Troubleshooting of pumps, valves, and piping systems, including pipe threading. Troubleshooting of hydraulic cylinders and controls. Troubleshooting of pneumatic cylinders and controls. Performs routine setup and operation of a drill press, lathe, mill and grinding machine. Performs basic layout, steel fabrication and welding of carbon steel. Possesses knowledge of electrical schematics and mechanical blueprint reading. Understands basic water treatment principles. Documents work completed on work orders. Follows all prescribed environmental, safety and health rules. Complies with sanitation guidelines and good manufacturing practices related to neatness, product cleanliness and personal hygiene. Other tasks as assigned. Schedule 12‑hour shift, day or evening, with alternating weekends and some holidays. Knowledge & Experience Understands, adheres to and reinforces Amcor EHS policies and directives. Can work independently and in concert with Maintenance Mechanics, production co‑workers and management. Minimum 5 years maintenance technician experience, including: Allen Bradley PLC (ControlLogix, SLC‑500, & PLC5). Allen Bradley and other variable frequency drives. Servo control systems. Process control & instrumentation (temperature, flow, pressure, level, etc.). Power distribution – 480 VAC. Can perform all required PM checklists and ISO calibration for plant production equipment. Knowledge of general maintenance techniques, processes, and procedures for repair, installation and modification of a variety of equipment, systems and facilities. Education and Certifications High School Diploma or Equivalent (minimum requirement). Combination of technical training and schooling equivalent to a two‑year college or apprenticeship program. Associate’s Degree in Industrial Maintenance and/or 5 years’ experience (preferred). Skills, Abilities, Behaviors Skilled in the use of basic hand, shop, and power tools and a wide range of test and measuring equipment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maintenance manuals, schematics and drawings. Ability to conduct various tests on systems and apply appropriate regulations and standards. Forklift certification or ability to obtain the same. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and make decisions on the most appropriate approach to solving problems. Effective creative thinking and troubleshooting skills. Good critical judgment and initiative. Ability to cooperate well with others to follow safety procedures and prevent injuries. Experience in the printing and converting industries. Physical Demands Standing and walking for extended periods in the production facility. Occasional lifting of heavy items (cores, shafts). Ability to lift 55+ pounds frequently. Other demands include crouching and reaching. Use of ladders and elevated walkways is required. Work Environment Standard industrial environment with exposure to noise, oil, grease, and chemical odors. Risk of hand, eye, foot injuries, back strain, and falls. Exposure to electricity, compressed air systems, hydraulics, propane, and chemicals requiring proper safety precautions. Noise levels may necessitate hearing protection.
