Truck Equipment Technician III- Fire Annex

Overview The purpose of this classification is to maintain and repair County-owned trucks and heavy equipment, including but not limited to large grounds maintenance equipment, tractors and mowers. Responsibilities Lead and coordinate daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confer with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organize tasks to complete assigned work; monitor status of work in progress and inspect completed work; confer with co-workers; assist with complex situations and provide technical expertise; assist with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment. Perform inspections: test all truck and heavy equipment systems (drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, hydraulics, HVAC and emissions); complete or revise work orders for repairs; obtain required parts; perform emission tests per state requirements; inspect and test completed work; update required records. Perform routine and complex repairs on trucks and heavy equipment: gather information from operator reports, fault codes and other diagnostic data; troubleshoot and diagnose problems; identify items needing repair; complete required repairs; ensure operation and performance meet specified limits. Perform preventive maintenance: check and replace fluids; drain and replace oil; collect and recover refrigerants; change and replace filters; lubricate mechanical parts; install and replace blades; rotate, mount and balance tires; replace tires, belts, and hoses; check and replace batteries; grease equipment; flush radiators; and perform tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned. Determine materials for projects: gather equipment, parts and supplies; assist in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; initiate requests for new or replacement materials. Operate or use various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments; operate and maintain basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational training and four years as an automobile technician. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license; Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred and must be obtained within 12 months of hire date. Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, confined spaces, machinery, or electric currents.
