Job Description
This position offers an opportunity for an experienced Surveyor to plan, coordinate, and execute land surveying activities for construction, boundary, and topographic projects while also contributing to design work using Civil 3D and MicroStation. The Surveyor ensures accurate data collection, adherence to safety and regulatory standards, and timely delivery of survey results. When not in the field, this role focuses on data processing, digital terrain model creation, and detailed design work to support a diverse portfolio of municipal, government-funded, federal, and select private projects.
Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and execute land surveying activities for construction, boundary, and topographic projects.
Perform field surveys using GPS, total stations, data collectors, and other survey instruments to collect accurate data.
Conduct topographic, ALTA, boundary, grading, and site development surveys in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.
Import and process survey data, create digital terrain models (DTMs), and prepare CADD-based deliverables using Autodesk Civil 3D and Bentley MicroStation with InRoads.
Interpret and apply survey computations, plans, and construction drawings to ensure accurate layout and documentation.
Prepare and maintain survey records, maps, and reports with a high level of accuracy and completeness.
Ensure timely submission of survey reports and deliverables while maintaining compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget.
Support civil design and land development projects, including stormwater, site plans, site design, and related civil engineering tasks.
Collaborate closely with project teams, including engineers and designers, to coordinate field and office survey activities.
Demonstrate leadership in the field by providing direction, oversight, and support for survey crews and junior team members.
Identify and resolve field and technical issues using strong problem-solving skills in dynamic environments.
Adhere to safety standards and applicable rules and regulations, including NYS DOT requirements where applicable.
Travel to project sites during the work week as needed and represent the organization professionally with clients and stakeholders.
Communicate clearly with team members and stakeholders to ensure alignment on project requirements and deliverables.
Maintain and calibrate survey equipment, ensuring proper operation and reliability.
Perform physically demanding field work, including strenuous walking, bending, lifting, and carrying or loading equipment up to 50 pounds.
Essential Skills
High School Diploma or GED required.
Minimum 3-5 years of land surveying experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
Strong in land surveying for construction, boundary, topographic, ALTA, grading, and site development projects.
Proficiency with GPS, total stations, data collectors, and related survey instruments.
Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD for survey drafting, design, and data processing.
Experience using Bentley MicroStation with InRoads for survey and design work.
Knowledge of survey computations, plan interpretation, and construction layout.
Experience with data processing, importing field data, and creating digital terrain models (DTMs).
Ability to perform physical work, including strenuous walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and carrying or loading survey equipment.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate across disciplines.
Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills in field and office settings.
Knowledge of NYS DOT rules and regulations related to surveying is strongly preferred.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
Experience with NYSDOT surveying and mapping procedures is a plus.
Experience with Trimble GPS and Trimble robotics is a plus.
Experience with Trimble GNSS is a plus.
Experience with terrestrial LiDAR is a plus.
Experience with small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) for survey and mapping is a plus.
Experience with traverse and level run adjustments is a plus.
Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings is a plus.
Familiarity with Leica survey equipment is beneficial.
Experience with boundary survey software, drafting, and CAD workflows is advantageous.
Experience in civil engineering, civil design, stormwater, land development, and site design is beneficial.
Interest in working with an organization recognized among top engineering firms is advantageous.
Work Environment
The Surveyor works within a collaborative team of approximately five professionals, supporting a mix of municipal, government-funded, federal, and select private projects in and around the Rochester area. The role involves a combination of field and office work. In the field, the Surveyor uses GPS, total stations, data collectors, Trimble and Leica equipment, and other advanced surveying tools to perform construction, boundary, and topographic surveys. The work can be physically demanding and requires regular walking over varied terrain, bending, lifting, and carrying or loading equipment up to 50 pounds. In the office, the Surveyor works with Autodesk Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation with InRoads, and related CAD and survey software to process data, create digital terrain models, and produce detailed design and survey deliverables. Travel to project sites occurs during the work week, with no typical weekend stays; allowable lodging and meal costs are reimbursed in accordance with company policies. The pay range for this position is $67000.00 - $97000.00/yr.
