Cytotechnologist Job Description

Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor’s degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist’s years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position’s specialty is the main requirement.

Requirements:

  • Pathology Information System experienced preferred;
  • Successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Cytotechnology program; or equivalent education and experience;
  • Cytotechnologist Certification by recognized board such as ASCP;
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university;
  • FNA-Biopsy Team: Maintains all stains, materials and FNA carts utilized during FNA procedures;
  • Six months didactic training and six months practical experience;
  • Assumes the duties of the cytopreparatory technologist when necessary;
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding patients according to hospital policy and federal HIPAA regulations;
  • Cytotechnologist experience is a plus, but new graduates are encouraged to apply;
  • ASCP certification;
  • Experience is a plus, but new graduates are welcome to apply;
  • FNA-Biopsy Team: Accessions, stains, and performs initial cytologic evaluation on all cases performed during an FNA adequacy procedure;
  • Certified in the area of Cytotechnology by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or ASCP eligible preferred;
  • Performs cytology-based molecular pathology testing (HPV);
  • Bachelor’s degree verified by NYSDOE as meeting Bachelor’s degree requirements for full licensure of a clinical laboratory technologist.
