Pathologist Assistant Job Description

The Assistant Pathologist prepares and selects tissue samples for analysis. Under the supervision of a pathologist assists with preparing and dissecting surgical specimens. Being an Assistant Pathologist requires a bachelor’s/master’s degree from an accredited program. May record findings or sterilize equipment. In addition, Assistant Pathologist may require certification as a pathologist assistant. Typically reports to a pathologist. Working as an Assistant Pathologist typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.

Our company is looking for a Pathologist Assistant to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Removes and dissects visceral organs, brain and spinal cord in order to demonstrate the presence or absence of disease and/or atomic variation;
  • 15% – Establishing, applying and enforcing policies and procedures in accordance with all institutional and laboratory regulatory agencies;
  • 60% – Physical examination and description, evisceration, dissection and submission of tissue sections for microscopic examination;
  • Provides an interpretation of the patient cases to the anatomic pathology supervisor and pathologists;
  • Assists in all aspects of anatomic pathology;
  • Protocol development: Under the supervision of pathologist participates in the development of Anatomic pathology protocols;
  • Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of surgical pathology area. (20%);
  • Performs all elements of gross examination and sectioning of every type of surgical pathology specimen;
  • Organizes gross room workflow for efficiency and productivity. (20%);
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required;
  • Prepares frozen tissue sections and other tissue sections within or outside of the histology department;
  • Performs other duties as assigned relating to the responsibilities of pathology assistant;
  • May instruct, assign and/or assists pathology residents, students and new employees in protocol for handling and describing specimens. (10%);
  • Orientation and training: Participates in the orientation and training of new employees, residents, and students;
  • 5% – Other duties necessary for the operation of he laboratory.

Requirements:

  • Pathologist Assistant License or must be New York State License eligible;
  • Must be physically able to perform autopsies;
  • Experience with Copath or a similar laboratory computer system is a preferred;
  • At least one year of Pathologists Assistant experience is required. VA experience is desirable;
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and writing skills;
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience;
  • A current license/certification with either AAPA, ASCP, or a designated Department of Health.
