Histotechnologist Job Description

The Histotechnologist uses computerized equipment and records observations from tests. Performs complex histological procedures by cutting, mounting, and studying specimens of human tissue to provide data on the functioning of tissues and organs, and the causes or progress of disease. Being a Histotechnologist requires a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. May require ASCP registration. In addition, Histotechnologist typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires Histotechnologist, HTL (ASCP). Being a Histotechnologist gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Working as a Histotechnologist typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience.

Our company is looking for a Histotechnologist to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the maintenance and orderly condition of assigned equipment, instrument, and work area;
  • Stains the microscopic slide and covers with a resin and cover glass for protection and preservation of the tissue specimen;
  • Willing to work as part of a multidisciplinary research team in an exciting, fast-paced environment under the mentorship of a supervisor;
  • Perform other duties as necessary;
  • Performs frozen sections and staining as needed;
  • Performs general duties in grossing area as needed;
  • Demonstrates proficiency on Laboratory equipment and instrumentation;
  • Monitors block and slide storage and disposal;
  • Performs preventative maintenance procedures;
  • Processes surgical specimens in accordance with established procedures;
  • Disinfects and maintains work areas and instrumentation as needed;
  • Assist the Pathologist with grossing of specimens, preparation of microscopic slides, and more;
  • Embeds, sections, and stains tissue for microscopic interpretation by the pathologist;
  • Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems as appropriate;
  • Complies with hospital and Laboratory safety policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client/patient information;
  • Histotechnologist Certification (HT) preferred but not required;
  • An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR;
  • Detail oriented;
  • Overnight travel required;
  • ASCP histotechnologist (HTL) certification and Florida Histo Tech license;
  • Well organized;
  • Highly motivated;
  • ASCP Certified and at least eligible for registry for HT;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science (or related field). Associates degree not accepted;
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in a Histology laboratory;
  • Current HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification;
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week on a consistent and routine basis, some overnights and ability to work overtime if needed and pre-approved;
  • Meets the alternative education and experience guidelines set forth by the ASCP to become registry eligible for the HT category;
  • Certification as Histologic Tech by ASCP Board or equivalent.
