Crossing Guard escorts people to and from a designated area. May require a high school diploma or its equivalent and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Crossing Guard is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Additionally, Crossing Guard performs a variety of tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a supervisor/manager.

Our company is looking for a Crossing Guard to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Reports to his/her assignment on time, in uniform, and directs pedestrian traffic;
  • Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as street, schools, and construction sites;
  • Is alert for any infractions by motor vehicles which endanger the pedestrian traffic;
  • Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals;
  • Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areas;
  • Stop speeding vehicles to warn drivers of traffic laws;
  • Discuss traffic routing plans and control point locations with superiors;
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate authorities;
  • Report unsafe behavior of children to school officials;
  • Inform drivers of detour routes as necessary;
  • Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points;
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults;
  • Ensures the safe passage of pedestrian traffic at crosswalks;
  • Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary;
  • Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets.

Requirements:

  • Must be a high school graduate or GED;
  • The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted;
  • Knowledge of state motor vehicle and pedestrian laws;
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions;
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively;
  • Ability to report to various crossing guard work details within the Town at various times of the day and under all weather conditions;
  • The ability to see details at a distance;
  • Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do;
  • Ability to handle situations firmly, courteously and tactfully;
  • Provides information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person;
  • Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you;
  • The ability to hear sounds from all directions;
  • Capable of furnishing his/her own transportation to the Police Department for sign-in and sign-out, and to the crossing site;
  • Ability to read and write;
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and be willing to attend and complete first aid and traffic direction training courses.
