Duties

Functions/Duties:

Ensuring a system is implemented for tracking all implants and loaner trays, from vendor or distributor to the recipient at implantation and that all necessary staff have access to local training on the system.
Maintains a system of internal and external reviews ensuring overall compliance of all implants and loaner trays used within the medical center.
Tracks and analyzes required documentation pertaining to implants and loaner trays.
Utilizes qualitative analysis tools to prepare reports for trending, evaluate operations and facilitate improvements in workflow and quality processes.
Troubleshoots computer programs related to implants and on inputting data associated with implants, loaner trays and quality assurance programs.
Collaborates with end user management when deviations occur.
Updates the quality assurance program annually or when guidelines are changed.
Oversees the care and handling of highly specialized items which may require any or all the following: sub-zero temperature control; delicate care instructions; sterile processing; and refrigeration.
Monitoring the processing of PSAS consults to ensure the timely procurement of needed implants and/or the payment for or replacement of used implants.
Coordinating with the SCM inventory manager, purchasing agents for PSAS orders and the clinical service nurse manager, as appropriate, for the delivery of implants and loaner trays by sales representatives.
Serving as a VA medical facility point of contact, along with the Patient Safety Manager, to the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) for patient and provider notification in the event of a recall or safety notice potentially affecting Veterans with implants.
The incumbent performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements :

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience and/or Education (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification. None.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations : The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

GS-07 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
2. Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
3. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
4. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
5. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.

Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot and cold. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment.
The work requires standing, balance, walking/moving during the entire workday, frequent bending, twisting, turning, and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity to inspect RME and lift baskets and containers weighing 25 to 50 pounds from floor level to chest level. Employee regularly pushes loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds. Necessity for dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. Work requires depth perception, ability to distinguish colors and ability to hear equipment sounds, equipment and safety alarm devices.
