The Sleep Technologist plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders by conducting overnight and daytime sleep studies in a clinical setting. This position requires the technologist to operate specialized equipment to monitor and record physiological data such as brain activity, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rhythm, and breathing patterns. The Sleep Technologist collaborates closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate data collection and patient comfort throughout the testing process. Ultimately, the role contributes significantly to improving patient outcomes by providing high-quality diagnostic information that guides effective treatment plans.

High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited polysomnography training program.

Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or completed a sleep program.

Ability to work overnight shifts and manage patient care in a clinical environment.

Associate or bachelor's degree in a health-related field such as respiratory therapy, nursing, or biomedical sciences.

Experience with advanced sleep diagnostic equipment and software.

Additional certifications such as Certified Sleep Technologist (CST) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and data management.

Set up and calibrate polysomnographic and other sleep study equipment prior to patient testing.

Monitor patients during sleep studies to ensure data quality and patient safety, adjusting equipment as necessary.

Collect and analyze physiological data including EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, respiratory effort, airflow, and oxygen saturation.

Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with all regulatory and institutional policies.

Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of sleep study equipment to ensure optimal functionality.

The Sleep Technologist utilizes technical skills daily to operate and troubleshoot complex diagnostic equipment, ensuring accurate and reliable data collection. Analytical skills are applied to interpret physiological data and prepare comprehensive reports that assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment planning. Attention to detail and organizational skills are critical for maintaining precise patient records and adhering to regulatory standards. Additionally, teamwork and collaboration skills enable the technologist to work seamlessly with healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care.
