Position Overview
The Relief Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to companion animals on a temporary or as-needed basis, supporting the hospital’s general practice and wellness services. This role is ideal for a licensed DVM seeking flexible scheduling while delivering compassionate, evidence-based veterinary care in a collaborative clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive wellness and preventive care, including physical exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and client education
Diagnose and treat common medical conditions in small animals
Perform routine soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures, as applicable to hospital standards
Develop and implement diagnostic and treatment plans utilizing available in-house and external resources
Accurately document medical records in accordance with hospital protocols and legal requirements
Communicate effectively with clients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, prognoses, and preventive care
Collaborate with veterinary technicians, assistants, and support staff to ensure efficient patient flow and high standards of care
Adhere to hospital policies, safety protocols, and applicable state veterinary regulations
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school
Active veterinary license in the state of practice (or ability to obtain)
DEA license and state-controlled substance registration (or ability to obtain)
Strong clinical and diagnostic skills in small animal general practice
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to adapt quickly to new teams, workflows, and hospital systems
Schedule & Engagement
Flexible, short-term, or per diem assignments
Shifts may vary by hospital needs and may include weekdays and/or weekends
No long-term commitment required unless mutually agreed upon
