Certified Medical Assistant - Operating Room
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Operating Room 0.80 - 0.90 FTE, 64 - 72 Hours a Pay Period Days, Hours between 6:30 am - 3 pm or 8 am - 4:30 pm (Late Stay Requirement) Weekends: Weekend Call Rotation Holidays: Holiday Call Rotation
*The expectation is for the selected applicant to complete the required Surgical Technologist training within 1 year of employment (online surgical technologist training) and achieve certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Center for Competency Testing within 1 year of employment. Upon certification they will transition from a CMA role to the Surgical Technologist role. This transition will include a pay increase and a sign-on bonus
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a health care professional who provides specific services in the Surgery Department under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and Surgeon. The CMA is active in the surgery process and collaborates with the surgical team to deliver quality and safe health care. The CMA has an understanding of the surgical processes in the operating room. Provides care while meeting physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient and family. The CMA collaborates with the surgical team to modify the plan of care based on the needs of the patient and reports changes in the patient's condition to the RN.
Keeps updated on current surgical practice, medications, and legal/ethical issues.
Follows best practice recommendations including but not limited to AORN, AST, Perioperative Guidelines, and organization wide policies and procedures. In coordination with the surgical team, assembles the necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for the surgical procedure. Checks that all equipment is functioning properly before use. Notifies RN of defects, removes defective equipment from the patient care area, labels and documents defect(s) and need for repair in order to maintain a safe environment.
Practices safe site surgery techniques including but not limited to aseptic technique, time out standard work and stops the line when safety issues or concerns with patient care occur.
Performs sponge, needle and instrument counts with the RN in accordance to policy/procedure.
Demonstrates an understanding of surgical procedures. Follows recommended infection control/prevention procedures.
Follows department specific policies, procedures, standard work, and assists in updating the standard work content as needed.
Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
Sponges or suctions the operative site.
Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
Review the patient's chart, identifies patient, verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms, and brings the patient to the assigned operating room.
Assists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
Attends focus board and mandatory staff meetings and completes educational requirements of Winona Health.
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Graduate of Certified Medical Assistant Program
Certified Medical Assistant Certification
Completes required Surgical Technologist training within 1 year of employment (online surgical technologist training)
Achieves certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Center for Competency Testing within 1 year of employment
Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word and Outlook. Patient Information Database (Cerner)
