Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, you will play an essential role in patient identification, precise blood and specimen collection, database management, and cross-functional teamwork, partnering with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes. A typical day for a Phlebotomist may include:
Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor while engaging in active patient identification utilizing two distinct points of reference (full name and Medical Record number or Date of Birth) to ensure absolute precision prior to any collection protocol.
Executing consistent, flawless specimen labeling by recording the five required pieces of data directly in the presence of the patient, actively avoiding mislabeling incidents through rigorous clinical practices.
Selecting and utilizing appropriate collection devices and effective capillary collection techniques tailored to each individual patient across adult and pediatric clinics while issuing correct fluid and urine containers with proper labels.
Enforcing proper laboratory workflow sequencing by strictly adhering to the established Order of Draw, demonstrating a deep understanding of necessary collection tubes and specimen integrity to minimize hemolysis or clotting.
Entering detailed test requests into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)—accurately capturing patient identities, account numbers, ordering physicians, and requested tests—before generating, applying system labels, and delivering specimens to testing areas in a timely manner.
Safeguarding the clinical environment by executing rigorous handwashing techniques and utilizing and disposing of gloves, sharps, biohazard waste, and non-biohazard materials in strict accordance with safety guidelines.
Maintaining compliance with state and corporate safety regulations by closely adhering to Standard Precautions, the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazcom protocols, and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.
Acting as a true team player by utilizing lulls in workload to proactively assist fellow coworkers regardless of station assignment and helping provide critical break and meal coverage to guarantee the timely completion of STAT orders.
You understand that patient identification is the most critical aspect of blood collection and you approach your work with a high level of vigilance and care.
Strong organizational skills and sharp critical thinking allow you to rapidly prioritize collection requests to meet strict, time-sensitive laboratory testing turnaround deadlines.
You communicate confidently and collaborate effectively with diverse patient populations, nursing personnel, and medical staff across multiple hospital environments.
You enjoy executing precise clinical instructions within a fast-paced medical framework while maintaining an exceptional customer service orientation.
You are comfortable working with automated data networks and possess strong computer skills to navigate technical laboratory databases.
Adaptability allows you to confidently manage the physical demands of a high-volume collection schedule, including sitting, standing, walking, and lifting clinical supplies.

To be considered for this Phlebotomist opportunity, you will have:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Phlebotomy Certification OR registration as a Registered Medical Assistant (MA) required.
A minimum of 1 year of hands-on phlebotomy experience required.
Demonstrated competence and sound working knowledge of laboratory testing, clinical specimen collection, and LIS software entry.
Effective communication skills, with a history of maintaining strong, customer-service-oriented patient interactions.
Scheduling and Shift Requirements: This is a Per Diem position requiring a consistent evening shift schedule from 7:00am – 3:30pm. Per diem employees are fully included in the standard department holiday rotation across all shifts and are typically scheduled to cover 2–3 holidays per calendar year. Additionally, candidates must maintain the scheduling flexibility to rotate through Inpatient, Outpatient, Adult, and Pediatric Clinics or alternative sites as scheduled, including a minimum of alternate weekends.
Training Requirement: Must be able to attend initial training scheduled from 7:00am – 3:30pm for an introductory period of approximately 8 weeks.
