Director, Emergency Department (ED)

The Emergency Department Director at Sentara Leigh Hospital is accountable for the 24/7 daily operations, clinical effectiveness, strategic planning, and budget management of the emergency unit. The Director leads a team of ER nurses, technicians, and support staff to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care aligned with Sentara Healthcare’s mission.

Operational Leadership: Oversee daily ED operations, patient flow, and throughput to maintain target wait times and short lengths of stay.

Quality & Patient Safety: Partner with hospital leadership to implement evidence-based practices that improve clinical outcomes, regulatory compliance, and patient satisfaction.

Financial Management: Develop, monitor, and manage the departmental budget, including purchasing, payroll, and resource utilization.

Community & Emergency Services: Coordinate care for urgent and emergent cases, including supporting the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance landing pad on campus.

Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s degree preferred.

Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of acute care nursing experience, with significant leadership and supervisory experience in an Emergency Department setting.
