Job Summary:

Step Down Unit Nurse Practitioner in San Francisco, California. This position involves providing specialized patient care in a dedicated step down unit, monitoring patients requiring intermediate levels of care. The candidate will be responsible for managing complex cases, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring optimal patient outcomes in a dynamic hospital environment.
Job Details:
Schedule: Rotating shift times with a minimum of 36 hours per week, with shift hours of 12 hours. The start date is 08/18/2026.
Required Qualifications: CA Registered Nurse (RN) license, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Basic Life Support (BLs), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Minimum of 2 years of experience in Pediatric Cardiac Transitional Care or Step Down, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience, and ability to float to other UCSF units and facilities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications: Telemetry experience, experience with arterial lines and central lines, pediatric critical care, transitional care, and cardiac experience.
Certifications: BLS, PALS.
Skills: Management of blood and blood products, arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), dysrhythmia interpretation, infection control/PPE, pediatric stroke risk assessment, neonatal and pediatric procedural care, starting and maintaining IVs, telemetry monitoring on the unit, and pediatric emergency response protocols.
Additional Unit Details: Staff-to-patient ratios are 3:1 during days, nights, and weekends. The unit cares for a diverse patient age range from neonates to adults, with daily census of 9 patients. Interdisciplinary support includes IV teams, respiratory services, radiology, social services, pharmacy, and rapid response teams.
Orientation & Modules: Orientation hours are 48 hours, with completed modules ranging from 1 to 24 hours, relevant to unit specialty.
Travel & Location Requirements: Ability to float within a 75+ mile radius, with travel compliance and RTO policies in place. Start date can be sooner if approved, and no requests for early start without prior authorization.
References & Employment: Two recent employer references are required. Employment history with university-affiliated facilities must be included for rehire eligibility.
