POSITION SUMMARY From within a small Human Resources team, the HR Generalist provides comprehensive human resources support, with responsibility for accurate coordination of the company's recruiting, benefits, payroll, employment administration, and corporate safety and compliance programs. This position serves as a key resource to employees and management regarding HR policies, safety practices, regulatory compliance, workers' compensation, and environmental requirements.
The position coordinates with operational units to manage safety initiatives designed to maintain a safe, compliant workplace and reduce workplace injuries and exposures. Responsibilities include safety training, inspections, recordkeeping, incident investigation support, regulatory reporting, and coordination of hazardous material and hazardous waste management activities.
The HR Generalist works closely with management, supervisors, employees, payroll and benefits providers, safety vendors, environmental service providers, and regulatory agencies, as appropriate, to produce accurate payroll administration, effective HR practices, and a strong culture of workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Human Resources Generalist Responsibilities Provide day-to-day HR support to employees, supervisors, and managers regarding Company policies, procedures, benefits, payroll, attendance, and employment practices.
Coordinate completion of required new-hire documentation and employment records.
Maintain accurate employee records within the Company's HR information systems and personnel files.
Assists with bi-weekly payroll as needed.
Support employee relations activities and assist with workplace investigations as assigned.
Assist management with performance management, attendance, corrective action, and employee documentation.
Assist with employee communications and Company-wide HR initiatives.
Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, pre-employment screening, and new-hire activities as needed.
Assist with employee separations, including termination documentation, final payroll information, benefit notifications, and other offboarding activities.
Assist with payroll, benefit enrolments, safety, and regulatory audits.
Maintain current knowledge of applicable employment, payroll, safety and environmental regulations affecting assigned responsibilities.
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Assist management in developing, implementing, maintaining, and communicating corporate safety policies, procedures, programs, and expectations.
Coordinate required employee safety orientation and ongoing safety training.
Maintain safety training records and monitor completion of required training.
Conduct or coordinate routine workplace safety inspections and assist management in identifying unsafe conditions, practices, and potential hazards.
Maintain required workplace injury and illness records and applicable regulatory reporting.
Coordinate safety committee meetings, activities, inspections, and follow-up items as applicable.
Assist management with job hazard analyses, personal protective equipment assessments, emergency response procedures, and other workplace safety initiatives.
Coordinate safety-related vendors, consultants, training providers, inspections, and services.
Prepare periodic reports for management regarding injuries, incidents, training, corrective actions, and safety performance.
Workers' Compensation and Injury Management Coordinate the administrative aspects of workers' compensation claims and serve as a liaison among employees, supervisors, medical providers, insurance carriers, and claims administrators.
Monitor open workers' compensation claims and maintain communication with appropriate parties regarding claim status.
Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Accounting, or a related field preferred.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience may be considered.
Experience Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, payroll, safety, environmental compliance, or a related field preferred.
Demonstrated experience processing or administering payroll strongly preferred.
Experience in a manufacturing, industrial, distribution, or similar work environment preferred.
Experience with hazardous materials, hazardous waste management, or environmental compliance preferred.
Experience working with HRIS, payroll, timekeeping, and benefits administration systems preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of payroll administration and payroll-related processes.
Working knowledge of human resources practices and employment laws.
General knowledge of EPA and applicable state environmental requirements concerning hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
Ability to interpret and apply Company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Strong mathematical, analytical, and reconciliation skills.
Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
Ability to professionally address employee questions and resolve payroll and HR issues.
Ability to conduct safety inspections and identify potential workplace hazards.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to learn and effectively utilize payroll, HRIS, safety, and environmental management systems.
Preferred Certifications and Training SHRM-CP, PHR, or comparable human resources certification.
OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour General Industry training.
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training, when applicable to assigned duties.
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste training appropriate to the Company's generator status and assigned responsibilities.
DOT Hazardous Materials training when responsibilities include preparation, offering, or coordination of regulated hazardous material shipments.
Physical Requirements Ability to perform duties in both office and manufacturing/industrial environments.
Ability to walk through production, warehousing, and other operational areas to conduct safety and environmental inspections.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods when conducting inspections or training.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment while entering designated work areas.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, electronically, and in writing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT This position operates in both a professional office environment and manufacturing, warehouse, or industrial environments. While performing duties in operational areas, the employee may be exposed to moving machinery, noise, chemicals, hazardous materials, temperature variations, and other conditions normally associated with manufacturing operations. The employee must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
