Field Engineer

The Field Engineer is responsible for engaging in the day‑to‑day operations that ensure MetroNet meets all compliance requirements for all pole attachment agreements. The role includes walking off and inspecting aerial and underground plant compliance for pole attachments, including main line construction and drop attachments. The Field Engineer also oversees the attachment corrections process by working with in‑house and contract partners, ensuring conformance with MetroNet, pole owners, local, state, and federal standards and specifications.

Perform pre‑inspection audits of existing plant and service drop attachments.

Assign work to in‑house and/or contract partners to correct deficiencies.

Conduct post inspections of remediation work and verify compliance with construction and safety standards.

Report to and assist the Compliance Manager in inspections and oversight of attachment projects.

Review, analyze, and recommend outside plant construction and service drop activities to correct attachment issues.

Oversee field construction and service drop activities, including quality assurance.

Maintain on‑site jobsite safety.

Verify completion of accurate production records with the Compliance Coordinator.

Communicate daily with contract partners, in‑house teams, and Field Ops compliance personnel.

Produce high‑quality results efficiently and cost‑effectively.

Represent MetroNet professionally to customers, pole owner representatives, and internal teams.

Pursue personal development of skills and knowledge necessary for effective performance.

Adhere to company policies, regulations, procedures, and principles.

Identify, photograph, and map detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, service drops, handholes, and other outside plant infrastructure.

Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.

Gather notes on buried, aerial, and underground cable systems and supporting structures.

Complete field surveys, quality assurance, redlines, and asset documentation to determine optimal routes.

Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.

Deliver detailed field notes and photographs.

Utilize tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, fiber splicers, and laser rangefinders effectively.

Follow guidelines set by the Field Operations department and pole owner agreements.

Develop cable placement plans to meet NESC, NEC, and pole owner protocols.

Input field survey data, notes, photos, and sketches into the computer system.

Review proposed aerial construction and service drop placements, making recommended changes for clearances and facility types.

Travel weekly with up to 75% travel to other cities and states as required.

High school diploma or GED required.

Associate or bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering or equivalent work experience.

Minimum 3 years of aerial and underground construction experience in the communications industry.

Demonstrated knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and National Electrical Code (NEC) sections related to communication line installation and maintenance.

Proficient knowledge of telecommunications engineering and construction principles.

Excellent computer navigation skills, including design software and Microsoft Office, especially Excel.

Experience with aerial, buried, and underground designs preferred.

Experience with fiber cable placement preferred.
