RN Step Down

A leading healthcare organization in the Warwick, Rhode Island area is seeking a compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse to join their Step Down unit on a full-time onsite basis. This is a three-month contract position beginning August 31, 2026, offering an excellent opportunity for nursing professionals to contribute to patient care in a dynamic acute care setting. The successful candidate will deliver comprehensive nursing care to step-down unit patients, monitoring vital signs and clinical progress while managing complex medication regimens and medical equipment. You will assess patient conditions regularly, identify changes requiring physician notification, and implement evidence-based interventions to support recovery. Daily responsibilities include documenting accurate and timely patient records, communicating effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, and ensuring patient safety through adherence to protocols and best practices. Beyond direct patient care, you will educate patients and families about discharge planning, medications, and self-care management. You will collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and social workers to coordinate comprehensive treatment plans. The role requires maintaining a safe, clean patient environment, responding promptly to patient requests and concerns, and advocating for patient needs. You will also participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and professional development. Time management skills are essential, as you will balance multiple patient assignments while maintaining exceptional care standards.

Candidates must hold an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Rhode Island or possess multi-state licensure. Step Down unit experience is required; applicants should demonstrate a minimum of one year of progressive nursing experience in acute care settings, preferably in intermediate or step-down care environments. You must possess strong clinical assessment skills, critical thinking abilities, and the capacity to manage patients with complex medical conditions requiring close monitoring and frequent reassessment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, including the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams and interact compassionately with patients and families during vulnerable moments. You should be comfortable with electronic health records and medical technology, demonstrating proficiency with monitoring systems and medication administration devices. Strong organizational abilities, reliability, and commitment to professional standards are non-negotiable. CPR certification is required, with BLS certification preferred. The ability to work independently while seeking guidance appropriately, combined with flexibility and adaptability in fast-paced healthcare settings, is crucial for success in this position.
