This position requires a doctor’s degree in Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent that is recognized by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was granted. This degree must have been accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); Association of American Medical Colleges; the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was granted.

The incumbent must also possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a physician from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or another territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: The position requires satisfactory completion of graduate medical education (a “residency”) in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine or Pulmonary Medicine/Critical Care. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those residency and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. These are described below. A residency program involves training in the specialized field of Internal Medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in the specialty of Pulmonary Medicine/Critical Care in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital, or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

Duties for the Physician (Pulmonologist) GS-0602-15 include:
Administering, coordinating, evaluating, recommending, and/or developing medical programs and overseeing the operation of such programs throughout the agency on a national scale.

Advising senior executives regarding Pulmonary Medicine.

Contributing to agency strategic planning with responsibility for evaluating differences between actual and planned program requirements, recommending corrective action when imbalances occur in major medical projects and taking appropriate action to improve or simplify program operations or reduce costs.

Presenting professional findings to senior leaders for study with conclusions and recommendations that serve as the basis for decisions supporting short and long-range
planning.

Reviewing and analyzing medically-related data to identify, evaluate, and define health problems. Preparing accurate scientific and medical reports, developing presentation materials that take highly technical information, and making information understandable to a wide range of audiences with varying degrees of understanding.

Serving as senior advisor to the Chief Medical Officer, agency leaders and providing support to program directors on medical and epidemiological matters specifically related to pulmonary
conditions.

Reviewing, evaluating, and proposing changes to legislation, regulation, policies, and/or procedures for improving the quality of medical services and related professional activities
nationwide.

Serving as a subject matter expert on diseases of the respiratory system including but not limited to structural, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic conditions.
